Which spring compressor

I just brought my shocks to the place who installed my tires. He was happy to do it and didn’t even charge me …

 

I'm going through this same exercise right now. I've tried using everything under the sun and the only one I could find that worked (which means fitting between the narrow coils) is the one you posted. That is the exact kit I bought and it works great.

I disassembled them, had the springs powder coated and Koni's sent in for rebuild. Here is my before shot.

I couldn't use the plastic cover because it made it too thick. I was able to pry it in and get it collapsed. Know that this compressor does not compress evenly at both ends, only the end where you put the wrench moves. This means you need to ensure you put that end at the bottom of the shock or you won't be able to get enough compression to remove the holders (whatever they are called - the little rods in the pic I posted. Coincidence. I've had my eye on this same specific tool, anticipating the need to do this work in the near future.

Not doubting your word, but by any chance might you have snapped any pics the last time you used it?

Most spring compressors on the market are made for compressing struts which have widely spaced coils. When I rebuilt my shocks I made a jig up to hold the shock in my shop press, old school made in USA but similar to a HF 20T. IIRC I used a short section of pipe with some holes cut in the sides so I could access the 2 retaining clips after compressing the spring. Very similar in action to a valve spring compressor but much larger.

I have the one from the first and the second picture. The first one is much safer than the second + he is (1) usable for differend kind of springs.
However those things are always to handle very carefully

 

The first one you linked is the exact one I have and works perfectly.

You will have to remove the plastic tray in order to get the clamshell in there on the fronts. The fronts are more compressed than the rears.

Start by putting the clamshell in the middle and wind it around until it won't go anymore.
