Intriguing, I should clarify that I’m actually not the owner yet, but gathering information for a possible purchase. Do you have any more information on it being stolen? Was it recovered?

What is a Canadian delivered Dino and it was stolen in 1985 in Canada.

    Where is this Dino today?

The Dino is in Canada, I am relying on photos and conversation with the current owner who is interested in selling, have not seen the car in person

Please post a photo of the chassis number stamping in the engine compartment (not the tag on the firewall).
Has it been restamped after the issue in 1985?

Very interesting. Within minutes OP went from owning to not owning a potentially stolen car.

Can anyone provide more details on where this claim of the vehicle being stolen originated?

Following the advice of my local police department,
I performed a search on the Canadian police information centre (CPIC) website, and no record of the VIN being stolen was found.

    Fair enough,
Some more details would be appreciated before I go back to the owner and tell him the car is a stolen vehicle.

And said owner is unable to provide proper information?
When (date) and where (from whom) did he buy it? Pix? Title? Proper Canadian title? Clean?

See also post #8. Thank you.

That is not really a bad sign. My very first post on FCHat was an SS# request for the 348 I was looking at.

I just spoke with the owner, he is sending me the photo Marcel has requested. I will post it as soon as I receive it.
Of course everyone has an opinion, but my intentions are genuine. I am looking to buy this car and the seller is more than willing to help get to the bottom of this.

when did the seller buy this in from whom? There’s multiple ways you can have authority. Search for Vin numbers, there wasn’t a standard format when this car was built new

additionally, there was no digital recordkeeping in a computer database back in 1985, just because they don’t show it on their computer system doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have proper due diligence in Other ways

Not taking sides in this, but from my experience, provinces in Canada have no good mechanism for dealing with old style serial numbers. Their systems are built around the current 13 digit VINs, which do not translate consistently from Dino serial numbers.

What province are you dealing with?

    Thanks for the pix.
Welding looks rather amateurish/crude to my eyes.
Stamping 01294 as well, compared to other chassis number stampings of Dinos in the same range.
However, it seems to be good.
Engine number 484 and Fiat engine number 000.6653 is correct and matching to 01294.
My notes say 01294 was stolen in Vancouver, B.C., in 1985.
When and where did the current owner buy this car?

You may now want to search further for numbers stamped on the car (owner should send you clear pix).
Pic showing the tag on the firewall.
    Pic showing the gearbox number.
Body numbers are normally stamped everywhere, drivers door hinge, door jamb kick panel, trunk lid hinges, bracket in engine room, etc.
Sample photos of such numbers on other Dinos here, just to give you the idea where to look for:

The welding looks very atypical for a Dino.
