Hi everyone I decided on the weekend to drop my transmission pan to change the fluid and adjust the gear selector as my shifts were a little baulky at times especially from first to second gear. All was going to plan however when I got to the turn buckle to commence my adjustment and I removed the dust boot I noticed the shaft is off centre and almost rubbing against the exit hole. Is everyone else's shaft centred as it exits the cabin or off-centred like mine? Any ideas would be appreciated as I have come to a stop until I am confident it is correct (which I doubt)! Urs suggestion sounds like the most likely culprit. If it turns out that the linkage is bent (which seems far less likely to me to be honest) and you want a straight one, message me. I'm keeping the shifter and the transmission is gone but I should have all the pieces in between for an 83 QV
The engine would have to be half way into the wheel well to have the shifter that far off. I think it more likely the fuel tank was out and not well reinstalled.
This passage is in the firewall in front of the fuel tanks, leading into the centre console. There is rubber bellow sealing this to the interior.
Thanks for all the replies, Afterburner I also thought the engine mounts may be sagged on the side in which the shaft is leaning towards, the shaft is definitely straight as I also had the centre console apart not too long ago and checked it. Rifledriver can explain a little more about the fuel tank scenario? I will loosen the engine mounts and jack up the left side of the engine just a little to see if this centres the shaft. Funny thing is the car drove great beforehand, no vibrations and very smooth just second gear was difficult at times. Thanks again for the responses it’s a great help!
Ned, on my car, the forward section of the shift rod (attached to the gear shift support) has got a bend in it. This bend is supposed to face up, not sideways or down (in which case it would rub on fuel tank cross feed.
Good to know afterburner as that might be my issue. Its a low mile Mondial 8 so I dont really know why that section would have been altered or removed previously.. Oh well looks like the centre console is coming out again to check, really appreciate all the help with this one folks.
Ned, clarification: I am talking about the green section here; I should have called it the middle portion: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ahh thanks afterburner for that I had intentions of removing my centre console today!!!! I report back hopefully with some good news, not a bad way to spend the weekend working on the car!
No bent in mine ! But I have seen shift rods bent also...when people forget to remove it before lowering the subframe with engine...
