The opposite of obscure . . . Watkins Glen, 1975. Niki Lauda leads Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi was the reigning world champion while Lauda would go on the win that year's title. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That was the first motor race I ever attended. I was sitting in the grandstand directly opposite the pit entrance. When Clay started blocking him and Niki began to pull away, Emmo could be seen shaking his fist every time he passed under the starter's platform. After Clay was black-flagged (by which time Niki had an insurmountable lead), clerk of the course Burdie Martin brought him to a stop directly opposite us to give him the "riot act". At that moment, team principal Luca di Montezemolo came running up the lane from the pits with arms flailing in the Italian manner. He got right in Burdie's face. gesticulating and yelling (though we couldn't hear what) for about 30 seconds, with Burdie just standing there impassionate with his arms folded, while Clay sat in the car watching. Finally, Luca realized he wasn't accomplishing anything, so he turned and headed back to the pits while Burdie waved Clay back onto the track. Clay was called in to retire the car a few laps later for "undisclosed reeaons", though I think we all knew why! Unfortunately I only had a miserable 110-format camera, or I would have gotten some great shots. I did grab a shot of Emmo after the race, and he was smiling (as he usually does), so I guess he had cooled off by then. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Andrea de Adamich and Tino Brambilla. Dino. How flimsy does that rear wing look! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Those were the 166 F2 cars. Actually, that wing was more robust than the ones that attached directly to the rear suspension; continued collapses of those led to their ban at Monaco in '69.
Bruce wasn't quite the "Monaco Master" that Graham Hill was, but he wasn't bad. In 12 starts, we was in the points 8 times, on the podium 3 times and won in 1962, at a time when Cooper had fallen from the ranks of the best teams.

Nope, just a screen name. Well spotted... are you the one who twigged that a couple of years ago? Penske was the team; that's me below on the far right at Watkins Glen in 1975. Image Unavailable, Please Login

1973 was really BRM's last hurrah. At the end of the year both Lauda and Regazzoni went to Ferrari, Marlboro went to McLaren (for a LONG time), and BRM just played out the string for a few more years.
