seeing the new 12c, made me think of taking a really poor condition daytona and going to town on a restomod - much like one of our members did a while back on a 512bbi.
reworked suspension, big wheels, wide rubber, maybe a 550 engine (if the original is toast), new AC, power steering, better headlights, taillights, maybe abs brakes etc.

if you bought a complete basket case car, the cost of doing all those things i mentioned vs bringing it back to the way it left the factory would be same, and there is a market for vintage cars that run like moderns.

yes i have read a lot about this car.
you are on the same track as me - replace all the poor quality and suspect systems, and replace with modern.

now i just need to find the junker ;)

Image Unavailable, Please Login "Harrah Ferrari fitted the new Daytona with their 4390cc DOHC V12 engine with 6 Weber 40 DCN20 carburettors, from the factory it produced 352 hp, the 0-60 mph time is 5.4 seconds and it can reach a 280 km/h (174 mph) top speed – 3 mph faster than the Miura.

In the years since it passed from Harrah’s ownership it’s had its paint redone, bodywork restored, and engine rebuilt (still matching numbers) – now producing 386 hp, a good 10% more than it left the factory with."

How about a 72 sleeper with 4823cc’s, bumping 320hp up to 385hp 368ft-lb, Daytona P6 cams, slotted rotors, Kevlar clutch disk, Fast electronic ignition, LED Hi/Lo beams, PS cooler, choice of modified or straight exhaust with a little work, and on the road today. Originally rated at 170mph, now ?. Outragious fun on the track with a sweet ripping sound. Saved all orig parts.

I was told years ago that the Daytona gearbox has a casting flaw. A Ferrari specialist has corrected this and can cast a new gearbox housing with the flaw fixed.

Everything inside them breaks but never heard of a casting flaw. Have seen a lot of destroyed Daytona transaxles but only seen one break the case. They were pretty bad for tearing the ring gear off the carrier.

To the OP. In the old days a lot of Daytonas were modified, some a fair bit but most people came to their senses and put them back stock. Some cut Spiders are even being made coupes again. To make one with great performance by todays standards it would be easier, cheaper faster to start with a fiberglass fake.
Making a resto mod from a real one and getting modern performance makes as much sense as a Charger restomod starting with a 69 Charger 500 Hemi.

i guess the cheapest and most expedient way to get a daytona resto mod is to buy a dodici cilindri..... :)

Was this not the famous one that raced the helicopter? If so, for me one of the more special Daytona's irrespective of the "upgrades".

Daytonas have quite a racing history. What was done to the transaxles to make them survive racing?

Same as the racing BBs. Judicious use of the clutch. Its shock load that breaks them.

For the most part Daytona transaxles broke for the same reason flat 12 transaxles broke. People forgot they are not drag cars and were dumping the clutch. American cars break differentials too but its not a five figure bill to fix it so its no big deal. I did a Porsche 930 transaxle once. They broke 1st, 2nd and 3rd before they finally broke the hub out of the clutch disc dumping the clutch.

It's not entirely comparable, Ross, but I'd consider a 550 or 575 and scoot the car closer to the Challenge Stradale/550 Prodrive ethos. Lot's of massaging to done on these Maranellos. And still retain the classic PF design.

One thing a Daytona needs is a real A/C. Why Ferrari thought the windshield needed to be cooled is beyond me.

It wasn’t A/C , it was the windshield defogger.

Sounds like a grand idea, so let's see:

    1. Start by buying "a complete basket case car"(???) for $500K(?), assuming you'll find one.
    2. Spend a few hundred $K for utter nonsense (see the list above)
3, End up with a "restomod" (no one will drive anyway) worth $100K on good day.

Rinse and repeat, for a said "market".

    Prove me wrong.
