    Hi all,

Recently I've developed an issue that has gotten progressively worse. Cold starts are perfect but if I have finished a long drive or sat in traffic, if I turn off the car and try to turn it back on, fuel pump runs but no starter click. Fuel pump on but no starter click but after 15-25 mins eventually it back to normal. It's really sounds like an electrical issue as opposed to mechanical. New fuel pump relay and cleaned existing grounds and cables which look ok and still the same issue. For those who have dealt with this specific hot start problem, is this one of the maladies cured by the upgraded fusebox replacements out there? Adding grounds?

    Thanks, Jay

Search for the "WR1 relay" mod. Might help or cure your problem.

That's it! I bought the kit for my car a long time ago, but haven't installed it because I'm not having any problems with the starter electrical, yet.
I do have the upgraded GT parts fuse board in my car, I can't recommend that or Guido's fuse board replacement enough, it solves a lot of problems with our cars!

Were the Instructions pretty clear with it? I’m decent with wiring but visuals help more than anything. I went ahead and ordered the kit and I need to install it before really driving the car again. I’ve had too many close calls lately.

It was so long ago I don’t remember. I assume the instructions were adequate, it’s only a few connections.

I do remember that it took a while to find a spot to mount it. I found a threaded stud on the subframe but I had to get a nut that fit it

This might help, there are several threads here about this mod, try a search for WR1 relay instructions/installation.
There is also an option to install a diode to keep the relay from burning out, but it seems for most cars that are driven weekly, the relay lasts about 2 years and it's a simple/inexpensive matter to just replace it.

My relay has been in place for at least ten years, if not 14. Either I’m getting lucky or have it installed in a protected location.

I replaced my fusebox with a GT unit 3 years ago. Solved a bunch of issues, but did not help with the occasional starter issue. My car has a momentary contact additional start button some prior owner drilled into the dash leather . Works well, but wish I had the relay.

new fusebox won’t solve your starter issue as it won’t fix the undersized wiring/voltage drop to the starter solonoid. The relay is your answer as others stated above.

Ordered the kit and probably going to get started on it next weekend. Thanks all for the recommendation and Alden for the extra visuals. That helps me visualize so much better.

Hmm, that's not the best place to put a relays. Water is going to enter those connection and who knows let the starter work.

Let’s find out. I waterproofed the relay connection and it doesn’t get driven in bad weather really ever.

Fyi, there is a kit with a waterproof relay that might be good for others to know about.

    https://ceautoelectricsupply.com/product/hot-start-relay-kit/

The only downside to this relay mod is that if the relay shorted, eg. by getting wet, it could cause the starter to turn over while the car is off and parked. If you left the car in gear, for example when parked on an inclined driveway, the car could lurch forward.
