Anyone think the 296 is now outgunned?

The difference is the rawness of the Huracan. That is something you either love or not. On the Ferrari side since 458 they have been far more reliable and indeed smoother , the gearbox/change is something to behold. The manner in which the hybrid component deploys in the 296 again is something to behold . The actual learning that has occurred from F1 has no doubt impacted the development of the battery, its placement and interface

 

Agree its not everyone’s “tea” but for me i much prefer track inspired cars as fun cars than the standard production versions. I dont consider STO a car to drive around town but out on the open rd or backroad its a lot of fun. Its not as raw or uncomfortable as some may think actually. Its not quite as well sorted as an RS Porsche but there is a certain character to the way it drives. I really like it. A 296 is fun in its own unique way as well - definitely harder accelerating and more versatile but as a weekend type fun car the Lambo has that extra level of sensation which gives more smiles imo. It’s definitely hard to beat that sound of the V10 - the Ferrari is no match there.

 

I dont have the collection nor the track experience as @Twosherpaz so I would welcome his comments here as well but I used to own a Pista and a 765 at the same time. The pista to me had a tremendous amount of body roll relatively speaking to the 765. So much so that I had the car lowered slightly and put on Novice springs. That helped and made it significantly better but it still wasnt as good as the 765. I ended up selling the Pista. It's still a great car and I would buy another- but compared to the 765 to your question- yes- significant more body roll especially if the factory springs were on the car.

I do not have any experience in the 296. Cant get myself to like the car enough to drive/buy it although have heard great reviews about it.

 

huracan and R8 70% the same. engine is 100% the same. same gearbox. the factories could program the gearbox and ecu tune a bit on their own. the r8 chassis was actually made in germany and sent to italy where the wheelbase was cut a bit shorter to assemble the huracan around it. same infotainment but diff graphics and menus but same algorithms.

in fact the gen 2 in testing could achieve slightly higher top speed due to the longer wheelbase and had more stability as a result. marketing and corporate held the R8 performance back for obvious reasons. there had been a planned road going GT2 version with the roof scoop from the concept car that was supposed to send off the R8 with a final goodbye and 640 hp but it was shelved.

the gen3 R8 had been in prelim development and mock ups built. they decided to keep the gen 3 wheelbase on the temerario so it could be a bit more comfortable since there would be no R8 version. in fact many of the design features on the temerario are softened based on the gen 3 R8 for they were planning on making the temerario design more extreme. but since there would be no R8 they wanted it to be more comfortable/refined than the huracan.

i know this because after 15 years of R8 ownership i developed some close friendships with dealer principals and folks at the factory.

i love my GTB- i am sure it was developed along the same lines as above because its refinement and performance application mirror the philosophy i felt around me in the R8. i am a lucky guy.

had it not taken so long i would have ordered a 5th R8 (temerario)

PS- going back to the OP- no. there is no way the 296 is or will be outgunned for the foreseeable future. as years go by i believe ownership is going to love this car- esp the new buyers attracted to the brand for the drive and ownership and not the investment and attention. performance wise i cannot see it either. i can only imagine what the VS will be like.
