Was probably talking about glazing the bores up and that mainly happens with cold engines in carby cars from back in the day because the richer fuel mixture "washes" the oil from the bores while idling for too long. Some crap like that anyway lol. When I did my apprenticeship back in 1998 my old school mechanic boss told me the same thing and he's from that era. We used to work on all the old carby cars in town as there was no one left that wanted to work on them and tune them which was good. When I went to Tafe as part of my apprenticeship, none of the other blokes had ever worked on a carby. By my 2nd year of Tafe, I had worked on Willies Jeeps, 1957 Chevs right up to servicing brand new cars. I was grateful I did my apprenticeship with him as I learned plenty.
Take the air cleaner off, rev it to 2,500, and dump a bag of talcum powder in. Presto, bores unglazed.
Fixed. You should stick to labiaplasties. To unglaze bores, find a long hill, go up it in 3rd gear with you foot flat to the boards. Repeat up to 3 times. If the engine is still smoky, it's probably rooted so rebuild it.
Good advice. Most pushrod V8's have the camshaft splash lubricated, so excessive idling will wear metal off the lobes, which then gets carried to the bearings.
Thanks Ian, but surely even at idle the modern oil pumps are pushing the oil up to the top of the engine ? The 355 drops off to 25 psi at idle, is that enough ? Just realised you said "pushrod"
Modern engines are better, designs have improved a lot. Volume is as important as pressure, 25psi is fine if enough volume is flowing. And a 355 has oil pumped inside the cams, exiting via holes where the cam bearings are. This plus oil splashing onto the lobes ensures reasonable life. Still not a good idea to excessively idle any engine, unless it's designed for it, like a truck or taxi diesel.
The fashion services a premium customer offering. Ie: When you have purchased enough cars from me plus worked yourself into valued customer status by participating in enough baby oil sessions at spa nights.
