I have a bit of a strange issue so apologies if there is already an existing thread out there that I couldn't find... I hadn't driven my 430 in about 2 weeks(battery was on a tender) but was about to take it for a drive a few days ago and when I went to turn the key expecting my "check ok" to display, the whole cluster was dead. No gauges or anything worked. Car started right up with no issues though. Turned off/on but no dice. Decided to use the trunk battery switch to force a reset however trunk release didn't work either. Using the manual release I was able to turn off power and when I turned it back on everything in the car worked again. Went for a drive and made three different stops running some errands. Issue never cropped up. Came home, parked car overnight, went to start in the morning, same issue again. I do the same procedure, everything works again, go for another drive with a couple stops, no issue. Rinse and repeat. Any thoughts what could be causing this? The two fuses in the trunk that are connected to the cluster and trunk switch are both good. Battery was replaced early this year, reads good and takes a charge from my ctek. What could I test next?
Define "or anything" please. It sounds like there is something wrong with the power supply to or in the instrument cluster. When you push the frunk release, a signal goes through the instrument panel to the frunk release relay, so that's a possible connection with instrument power. There are two fuses supplying power to the instrument panel: AF9 (live battery power) AF15 (key power) There is always live battery power going to the instrument cluster, but key power only when the key is turned on. Key power wakes up the instrument cluster displays. There are several systems upstream and downstream of AF15. Downstream is the instrument panel, some stuff related to the emergency frunk lid release system (for people trapped inside) and the interior light timer. I'm not sure what effect, loss of key power has on the timer module. Upstream of AF15 is, of course, the ignition key and things like numberplate and panel lights. You may be able to figure out if the issue is upstream or downstream of AF15. The fuses themselves are not likely to cause this intermittent behaviour.
So by anything I just meant it was basically all dead. No gauges working, center digital screen was blank, no check engine light, no odometer etc. The gear indicator screen was backlit though. Tested wipers as I saw another thread mention those two fuses and wipers, and wipers didn't work either. So assuming the numberplate and interior lights work its most likely something downstream?
Wiper control also goes through the instrument panel. I'm not sure of the circuit for the gear indicator screen. Yeah, including the instrument panel itself
Awesome. Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on how to determine if its the panel? Electrical stuff is not my strong suit.
It does, but there are no relays in the instrument power/lighting circuit: Battery >>> fuse >>> fuse >>> instrument panel Key >>> fuse >>> instrument panel >>> = wiring, splices, plugs A fault upstream of the key is going to cause lots more issues (including no start) Not really, other than checking power going to the back of the instrument panel. Image Unavailable, Please Login Connector B, pins 1 & 2. 1 = live battery, 2 = key power. Further upstream is connector XA02, but I'm not sure how accessible this plug is. I'm guessing it's behind the moisture barrier/frunk liner Image Unavailable, Please Login Downstream of this plug is the instrument panel, light timer module and airbag deactivation warning light module on dome light. i.e. key power stuff EM32 is the lights timer, but the location is a bit vague. Image Unavailable, Please Login Probably above the driver's left foot under the dash (LHD cars). You could try disconnecting the timer to see if there is any change. I doubt there will be. If it was shorting to ground, taking key power away from the instrument panel, I assume the fuse would blow. Plug XA2 also has the live battery power wire. There is nothing else downstream of the plug. Only the instrument panel. I don't have any practical experience on these cars, so I don't know which is easiest to access. Try searching the forum for instrument panel removal tips.
Thank you for taking the time to show all that! I think pulling the instrument panel is fairly easy so I can start there. I also did some more searching and found this post which describes exactly what's happening with mine, including the airbag light coming on. You were communicating with them on the issue too . Unfortunately I called Rod over at FAI and he said with pretty strong confidence that the board is going out. I sure hope that's not the case. Image Unavailable, Please Login
https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/cluster-issue-finally-solved.225929/#post-149092840 Yes, unfortunately, these are known problems. If the plugs are accessible on the back of the instrument panel, I would definitely check the power there before removing the panel entirely and sending it off to Rod at FAI. (EDIT: NB Just remove the applicable plug if you put key power on. If you remove the C plug and put power on, you will latch the Airbag light. If you send the panel to Rod, probably best not to touch your car until the panel comes back). I was looking at a video on YouTube of 430 panel removal a few moments ago. It didn't give me the impression that removing the cluster was all that easy.
Note the way I've labelled the plugs in post #8. It may seem odd, but this is how the wiring diagrams show the pinouts. So, you want to remove the connector on the far right (only) and check the voltage on the wiring harness (right hand, lower sockets)
