Very gracious reply Marcel, I was lucky enough to been made aware of the facts behind 80697 some time back privately, and as such kept very quiet until now that it has been made public.

Proves you cannot believe everything you read, and where ever it comes from, and however old that myth may be. Cold hard facts and supporting evidence are undisputable.

    the “zero” car it is
The ones that got a chassis number in 1987 are known and listed in Michelotto’s 50th anniversary book. ONLY the VIN numbered cars, not the others that did not get a vin (but at least one got a vin of a production car)

I need to unravel one mistery about the a prototype; the 1987 “F40LM” which most probably was not chassis 79890 but a chassis that was sold off after the road car production ended.
I have a possible chassis number that fits, but can not publish it (for now)

Many know that F50 99999 was built a few times; Even pre F50 era, Ferrari accidentally(?) made two cars with the same chassis number...

Tom, could the LM chassis you talk about be the one used by Simpsons to build the v12 engined car? It was built for an Italian guy to race there.

I have a feeling the Simpsons chassis was a fire damaged one out of Japan that came to the UK then, it had its VIN removed as a result, I spoke with the importer many years ago.

Would have been good though if it was an unstamped original chassis out of Italy.

Speaking of 1987 and numbered Prototypes, the official world premiere of the F40 was at the 52nd IAA Frankfurt Auto Show (11th - 20th September 1987) and it featured this F40 Prototype imaged below, and another F40 Prototype, one on the Ferrari stand, and one on the Pininfarina, or so I understand. One car was 74047 and the other was 74049, I am not sure which one this is, perhaps Marcel can confirm, but I don't think we've posted this image in this illustrious thread so far.

Note the super shiny finish appearance on the outer wheel rim for the early cars as seen here. See also posts #390 (page 16) and #433 (page 18) here. The whole wheel, center and rim had the same consistent flat color and finish on the regular production wheels.

74047 was on the Auto Becker stand in Frankfurt September 1987. This photo is from the Auto Becker stand.
74049 was on the Pininfarina stand in Frankfurt September 1987.

I love that application, contrasted with the black anodized wheel center bolts some of the Prototypes had.

On this day, Enzo Ferrari unveiled his Swan Song.

Talk about going out on a high note.

    Fiorano, July the 21st 1987.

Take your F40 out for the drive, or at least go in the garage and fire it up.

Did you ever find 1987 or 1988 prototype era images, or documentation which supports the claim beyond any doubt that 80697 is an original Ferrari factory F40 Vettura Esperienza or Prototype?

Also do you know what engine number, gearbox number and body number exists with the car today?

It appears that 80697 was a standard production F40 completed on the 22nd of January 1990, fitted with engine 17853, gearbox 625, body 193, and sold new to Giuliano Michelotto, which is why it's provenance requires some clarity.

Also, if you do some research on some of the very early production F40s, the engine, gearbox and body numbers applied, even though not exactly sequential, suggest clearly that the numbers above place it as a circa 1989-1990 car which is well beyond the Prototype era.

It's understandable that if they retained an original Prototype as is being claimed, they might later want paperwork to use it as a road car, but equally plausibly could it be that in 1990 Michelotto simply built another Proptotype lookalike out of a standard car to keep for themselves?

Inquiring minds wish to know, so early images and/or documentation will be helpful.

what you can do is to contact Michelotto and talk withbtwo engineers that worked on the F40 project at the time; Luigi Dindo and Paolo Favaro. You may even want to talk to Giuliano Michelotto. Best is to visit them and talk in person with these guys.
Do not forget to inspect the car!

Of course, I'd love to hear Giuliano's story in person, ask what documentation he can show me, and inspect the car.
