no, don't be silly! 850 https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/v-12-engine-into-308-build-over-on-grassroots.592594/
I watched the video. A very cool project. Mike will certainly do something special. It will be interesting to see what sort of engine he puts in it. If it doesn't have a Ferrari serial number though, I struggle to think of it as a "real" F40, despite the NOS F40 body panels.
Just wanted to say I really do appreciate the kind words from you guys. I still have a long way to go with the car, but 2025 looks a lot more promising than 2024. I've changed engine builders, and have (another) new engine going in next week, with plans of making it out to GTA Finals, and then testing through winter. If all works out, I have a sponorship program in the works that'll get me out to 5 major events next year with some financial backing to really keep making progress with the 308. It'll never be a real F40, I think we all know that part. I tried to make sure I made clear what was really going on in my intro - I'm building a "real tube chassis F40" which is, well, meaningless. It makes it clear I don't have the part that really counts. But I think what I build will be appreciated by everyone for the most part. I have tried to make sure my choice of engine is truly fitting for the choice of body, and is just as wild.
Lets speculate on engine. Obviously turbo. Given stancework history with BMW,and recent problema withi honda, my guess is turbo v8 bmw
Words can not describe how happy that makes me to hear. I think I shared this but a roadrace engine just is not a drag race or street engine and main builders will not accept that. When I started roadacing my H-D the shop helping me had only done hot street and drag engines. He helped me build a good engine...then I destroyed it. he helped me fix it, then I destroyed it. He came to the track with to see what the f... i was doing to his engines that he excepted 2 years at the strip from and discovered I was just ridings and shifting where he told me to. Roadracing is not drag racing. We changed some clearances, we changed the normal shift point and finished races. I was lucky that the guy i was working with was willing to adjust......but it sounds like you've make the required adjustments another way. fingers crossed!
I believe you could make a replica F40 engine based on a 308 core. I think that is what David Lee did with his Dino 246 with the “F40” engine.
2nd episode of f40 is epic. Didn't understand rational of real body parts with everything else home built but now I get it. This is what 80s f40 racecar would, have been. Can't wait to hear engine choice. If it outdoes judd f1 v10 I guess it won't be a BMW v8tt, hyabusa v8, 488 turbo. Can't wait
I haven't followed this project closely at all, but admire the effort that goes into doing something like this. There was a similar effort on Rennlist to K-swap a 996. He also went through a few K24 engines. I don't know if he ever got it working -- I think he stopped posting (though I didn't have time to closely watch that project either). Seems very weird -- in both swaps it seemed like a very professional effort, but the engines failed. I wonder if the K24 is not as robust as thought? Bear in mind, I had never heard of the K24 before I saw the 996 thread, so nobody knows less about that engine than me . In any case, it doesn't seem like it's easy to pull off the swap, engine-wise, for whatever reason. Hope that @M.Burroughs gets it sorted.
Having been inside both of those engine series... Ehhh not really. Or at least not worth the effort. Far easier and better ROI on going 348,355,360 and custom manifolds with turbos. F40 is just so different in so many little ways from the 3x8 that trying to replicate it would be a colossal pita and $$$$.
It's been a hard sell for some folks, and I think a lot of people are really honing in on my "real" comments and taking them too seriously. But yeah, you get it! I know I don't have a "real" F40 in a title/vin/chassis sense, but I have the body, and I'm building what would have been built for something like Group 5 or IMSA GTX... but with today's technology thrown in. I want the real body because that's what I admire. A lot of people misconstrue what I do or say as not having reverence for the marque, but it's quite the opposite. I couldn't dare "fake the funk," and I'm hopeful I'll do justice to the "real thing."
Shouldn't f40 have its own thread in f40 section? There is a ratarossa f40 project thread and you should have one too. Btw, what's engine? Ferrari v8 or v12 that you turbo? Very exciting
Apparently I'm not allowed to make a thread in the F40 section because I do not have a VIN. Not a big deal.
Can I start one? What about in special project section? Just pm me the engine choice 1st! I won't tell anyone.
Honestly I'm not familiar with the build. I'd have to look and see if they say how they built it. Pics etc.. lots of ways to get ~3.5-4L out of a 308 block.
In fact they used a 328 engine as the core and fully hot rodded it from there. Apparently the 328 block is near enough the same to an F40 block that the original quote was that the Dino Evo used an F40 'derived' block. The whole 'we used an F40 engine' was creative liberties with the truth which, after being parroted many times on the internet, turned into the belief that an actual F40 engine was used.
As for the engine that will be used I know what it is and I will not spoil it by telling or pretending to guess. I am however really interested to see the reveal next week as Mike is so very good at telling a story. The Judd V10 is a cool guess but those are too compromised to use and have mega expensive re-builds at fairly short intervals. Ryan Tuerck and the guys at Race Service put one in a Supra a few years back. I spent several hours looking the car over and talking to the fabricators and the work was beyond phenomenal. The level of the build and attention to detail was on another level. The videos I have seen of the car in action look equally impressive but it is a dedicated time attack car that could not be driven on the road.
Oh come on with that tease! At least give us a hint. Please. Is it Ferrari based? Maybe gt2rs motor since picking it up in Germany?
Very interesting. I am quite intrigued by that car. My lowly 308 was invited to Quail the year Lee showed his car. They parked me just a few cars away from his. I ogled but wasn’t able to get much detail other than it had an “F40 engine.”
isnt that dino engine nat aspirated and not turbo? thought it was a bored/stroked 308 motor. or that might be another dino restomod?
There is the 288 build with the twin turbo 360 motor / trans. Real 288 body, extended 308 frame. I met the builder as I purchased some of his old parts for my project - it is also not far from you @M.Burroughs in Orange. Lots of parts for the 360 out there. It is essentially the final edition of the 308 motor. Surprisingly very little performance add-on's less exhaust and tune. The transmission should handle the power given it is pretty much the same as the Audi/Lambo Graziano transmissions (in a slightly different configuration) they were running boosted power through and only needed heavier duty internals over 1000hp. I haven't really stated anywhere else, but they can be manually converted for way less than the price of the kits on the market, like 80% less.
You've gotta wait for the engine reveal But you're welcome to start a thread if you'd like to. Hopefully you like the choice of engine! I'm really excited about its possibilities. Wow, I'll have to check this out. How'd he get a real 288 body? That's incredible.
A 308 is basically a real 288....they changed very little to avoid need to repeat crash testing. I though I reas the same is true for the F40. But for sure on the 288, i bolted a 288 front valance and bumper on to mine, basically just bokted on and there are many 288 converted 308s running around. Since we're talking engines one of the conversions used a billet v12 block with TR crank and heads, similar engine to what I built
