After showing the F80 in Imola Ferrari has placed itself at a crossroads from which it will be very difficult to escape. It turns out that currently the Special series SF 90 XX Stradale, which Ferrari classifies as being the first road legal XX car, the Purosangue which is the brand's “SUV” and also the future electric Ferrari, all have a much more engaging sound than the mute boring one of the F80 hypercar. This situation in which Ferrari has put itself is unprecedented and quite surprising because during the last decades any of the hypercars F50, Enzo and LaFerrari, all stood out for being the most powerful road-going Ferraris of their time and, at the same time, absolutely irreproachable in terms of sound, thus maintaining the great tradition that Ferrari has in this regard.

As the sound of the F80's twin-turbo V6 is inferior to practically everything Ferrari has accustomed us to since its beginnings, there were even those who recently suggested that the problem could be solved by equipping the car with Ferrari's patented sound system that will be integral part of the future electric Ferrari to be launched in 2025. Anyone who has heard this system and even if they are not an audiophile, says that it reproduces the sound of a V8 in a way that is quite convincing, so much so that those who are less familiar with the sound of a Ferrari will think it’s the real deal.

I honestly never thought in my life that the day would come when the natural and special sound of a Ferrari combustion engine would need to be complemented or replaced by a hi-fi system.

The biggest mystery for me is the people who will continue to buy them...
Afterwards, between the batteries and the hi-fi system, for the fans of household appliances it's going to be an apotheosis !

For F80 money, one could have TWO F12tdf's. A no-brainer.

You are European; surely you understand what EU noise regulations means... The F80 will be produced in 2025, meaning it will have to abide by the rules applied next year and beyond. Whilst a turbocharged V6 will never sound as glorious as a N/A V12, they could make it to sound louder (the exhaust basically), if it weren't for the new regulations.

Yeah, if you only care about the sound (I am confused, is this a music forum???). The F80 will make the tdf seem like a Spitfire vs a Eurofighter driving wise though... For those who still care about driving and not just sound.

I agree. To keep criticising Ferrari for something they are forced to do suggests people simply have an agenda to criticise. I don’t really get it. Every single owner would most likely prefer a little more sound. But what they prefer more is that it actually exists.

I listened with a decent set of headphones to one of the finali mondial clips. Because of the rain the cars could not be driven under max power. Even the LaFerrari sounded significantly quieter than I know it is because the throttle was hardly opened.

from about 1.55 to 3.25 you see a comparison. Before that there are Comp, PuroSangue, SF90XX running around. The most sound seems to be coming from the Comp (or possibly even PS because it can get more power down). The overall point is that the circulating clips are not what should be used to judge how the F80 will sound. I’m not arguing it isn’t quieter - it has to be. It isn’t ‘silent’ though and until it’s properly track/road tested in the dry we won’t know. The sound also seems significantly higher pitched than some of the V12s which have more bass to them.

It is absolutely indisputable that the F80 features extraordinary technology derived from Ferrari’s Le Mans 499P and also F1 cars and is therefore currently the fastest Ferrari road car ever made. The criticism is only about the unusual situation in which for the first time in Ferrari's history its multi-million hypercar sounds much worse than the top-of-the-range special series SF 90XX, which is also a hybrid, the Purosangue which is an “SUV” and the future Ferrari 2025 whose code name I don't know but which is an electric car that it will have fake exhaust pipes and a V8 sound via hi-fi.

EU noise regulation does have an influence on decibels, but as far as I know it does not introduce any limitations regarding sound quality. I think the issue of decibel limitation isn't a problem for Ferrari owners and has always been easily overcome with a new exhaust or the Capristo-type exhaust valves that open and close at the driver's pleasure.

Firstly, we are not sure about that yet, and secondly the 288 didn't sound better than the Testarossa either.

It's true, the GTO's twin-turbo V8 was widely criticized even though it also derived from the world of F1. Regardless of these criticisms, the 288 became one of the most beautiful Ferraris of all time. We will wait to see if the same happens to the F80 within fourth years.

Beauty is subjective. As Enzo used to say, a car becomes beautiful when it wins (or for a road car, when it delivers). What matters is how a car performs and makes you feel when you drive it.

It's a fact that many of us don't like Flavio Manzoni's aerospace science-fiction drift and the great influence it's having on the design of the new Ferraris. However, when we compare the design of the F80 with that of the MacLaren W1 we have to thank Manzoni for what he came-up with.
Seen from the side, it seems to me that it is indisputable that the design of the F80 is much more appealing than the one of the W1. The rear of the F80 also appears to be more harmonious and better designed. Finally, with regard to the front part of the F80 seen from this angle,IMO it looks even less attractive than that of the W1. It probably isn't, but that black band imported from the 12 C seems to ruin everything.

I find it almost comical all these attempts to rewrite history to justify what is ultimately unjustifiable... I must remind you that the Ferrari DNA is the sound of the engines! maybe it is necessary (he plunges back into the history books of the brand...
But what does it matter, when you try to save the situation, because the reality is there and factual: V6 and no sound, it means that the product is not good.
It is better at some point to admit the truth than to continue to think that a wife who leaves the neighbor's house at midnight while mending her clothes, was there to play cards !
That's exactly what this car expresses.
more than 4 million in this thing... seriously...
even at 2 M it's already too expensive for what it is...

Of course not. The DNA of Ferrari is racing and transferring racing technology to the road. The rest of your rant it quite amusing...

No, that's the main weapon of the marketing department... A road car has absolutely nothing to do with a racing car, except for winks here and there !
Even the F50 that I love, as it was delivered, has nothing to do with a racing car... You haven't often ridden a real racing car... which FXX or Challenge are not either !

ADN Ferrari it’s Motorsport. Ferrari wins with v12, v8, v10, v6 and 4 cilinder.no one has never complained about it. The justification about sound it’s only for lamborghinisti
Who, beyond that, have no other roots. Maybe it’s time to change the camp ;)

It seems that Ferrari's own official communication channels disagree with you.

"Anyone who’s ever driven a Ferrari through a tunnel or stood at a track within earshot of a red Formula 1 car knows that the Prancing Horse represents glorious sound as much as speed." (https://www.ferrari.com/en-EN/magazine/articles/speed-of-sound-ferrari-bang-and-olufsen-range).

"(...) the V12 was chosen for its power (at 725 cv, the most powerful car in the segment), its soundtrack, its driving exhilaration and its smoothness. For the same reasons, in fact, that Ferrari has championed V12s since the birth of the company." (https://www.ferrari.com/en-EN/magazine/articles/the-ultimate-engine-the-v12).

Even with the current management violating the principles, the official website highlights the sound as part of the DNA of a Ferrari.

If I'm not mistaken, the decibel caps and GPF requirements are only applicable in the EU (and UK?).

It's true that their hands are tied in these markets. But what about the other markets, where they sell four times as many cars? Surely Ferrari has the resources to develop and offer more than one exhaust for its cars. It could even offer it in other markets as a costly optional "sport exhaust". I'd bet they would get nearly 100% uptake.

This would make the cars sold in the EU and UK will be less desirable. Owners in the EU and UK will inevitably try to get the exhausts from other markets for their cars. Is this a problem? Is it better to make all the cars less desirable?

I said racing technology transfer, not racing cars for the road. You seem to think that Ferrari is in the music business, which is not!

There is ten times more marketing material about racing technology for the road on their site.

Not if they want their cars to be legal. Even in the US there is crack down on after market exhausts that violate the type approval of the car: https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a40118585/epa-is-hunting-down-some-of-americas-biggest-tuning-companies/
In the UK the first fines have already been levied: https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/motoring-issues/illegal-exhaust-modifications/

How about quoting the Commendatore himself?

In a 1984 interview, Enzo Ferrari spoke about the sound of his macchinas (06:39):

"Mi ricordo che Von Karajan un giorno mi disse e mi scrisse: "ascoltando il vostro 12 cilindri scaturisce un'armonia che gesù maestro saprà mai interpretato"" ("I remember that Von Karajan, one day, told me and wrote me: "Listening to your 12-cylinder gives off a harmony that no master will ever be able to execute"").

Do you think he would mention it with such passion if it wasn't part of the DNA of his creations?

Enzo had a beautiful philosophy: he wanted to win races and have fast cars, but he was also passionate about the passion, sensations and craftsmanship of Ferraris.

The brand that aims almost only to transfer racing technology to its cars is McLaren, and it is very good at it.

    Ferrari is not McLaren!

Whoever wants to validate what this management is doing, ok, everyone has their own opinion. But no one can rewrite Ferrari principles and DNA.
