One might like one car or the other; I happen to prefer the LaFerrari appearance-wise. You cannot argue with the numbers though: 1050 kg of downforce. At the end of the day that is what matters for those who appreciate cars for their engineering.

All 3 exterior mirrors on the 1971 512 M are not original but (much) later additions.

Any updates on whether customers can choose to paint the black zoro mask stripe on their €3.5m car?

    https://www.topgear.com/car-news/interview/lamborghini-could-easily-make-a-1000bhp-temerario-sto-and-heres-how

To continue the discussion around lack of ICE development at Ferrari (maybe topic deserves a new thread), just came across these articles discussing the new Lambo V8. Out of the base supercars from Ferrari/Mclaren/Lambo the Temerario has the most interesting engine, revving to 10k rpm with very little turbo assistance. Some comments:

"Logic tells us it would've been cheaper for Lamborghini to stick to the tried-and-tested V-10, even in a watered-down form. Mohr told Top Gear the new eight-cylinder engine necessitated an investment in the "high tens of millions" and took about five years to develop. This means that work on Temerario's combustion engine started in 2019 when the company was still pumping out special-edition Huracans."

"“There was a discussion with the V6 and the V8, because the pure performance figures are achievable with a V6. But we thought the brand positioning would be a step too big, coming from the V10 to a V6. We don't think that the V6 is fitting to our brand.” Ouch, 296 GTB owners.
“The second thing is on the emotion: the potential for emotion is very important for us. A V8 with the flat-plane crankshaft has higher potential than a V6, so that was another reason we chose the V8.” Sore, Ferrari F80 fans?"

Uneducated comments. The F80's V6 specific output is 300 CV/litre. Good luck with that Lambo...

And since when should one look to a direct competitor as an arbiter of how we should view any brand’s products?

I think this is a stereotype that has little to do with reality. The STO is a terrific drivers car and I am saying it as someone who hasn’t bought a Lamborghini in decades, since my Countach QV.
They do produce cars that are not to my taste, but I prefer not to generalize

And yet they're the ones postponing their EV because they know the sports car market isn't ready for it, while Elkann desperately pushes it on, with more to come. Not sure if that says more about Lamborghini or the current state of Ferrari. But that's outside the scope of this thread.

Any idea when anyone (YouTubers, Journo's, et al) might get their hands on an F80? I know Ferrari is usually more hesitant than most in this regard, but I'm incredibly curious about driving impressions.

Since we’ve been talking about engine formats, here’s an interesting video talking about Porsche’s 919 V4. Very interesting story and engineering that allowed multiple Le Mans wins and a Nurburgring outright record (can you imagine what 5.19 feels like?!) A V4 no less. When you look at the whole package, it’s very clever and absolutely marvellous engineering.

Maximum efficiency is the only thing that determines today's turbocharged F1 V6 engines and that's what happens in the F80 too. The term ‘thermal efficiency’ is often used when speaking about engine performance. In simple terms, this describes the percentage of the energy from combustion that moves a car forward, as opposed to being lost as heat. In previous F1 V8s, V10s, V12s NA , thermal efficiency peaked at 29%. With the introduction of the V6 turbo-hybrids in 2014, that figure leapt almost immediately to around 40% and it now stands at over 50%.

The fact that sound, in scientific terms, is energy dissipation that could be used to produce more power, partly explains why the current V6s and V8s turbo engines are a complete disappointment in terms of sound when compared to the previous V8s, V10s and V12s NA.Apart from the future owners of the F80 who belong to a generation for whom the sound quality of an engine means little, I doubt that those owners who learned to appreciate the true sound of a Ferrari will be able to live with a hypercar of that price, which, although it has an engine whose efficiency is maximum, produces a boring sound that is perhaps one of the worst ever heard in a Ferrari.
That's why I believe that many F80 owners will very happily trade some of the engine's efficiency for a better sound. This will likely be done by replacing the stock exhaust system.

    They absolutely are.
If someone wants to race they better buy a race car.
