Pretty common. Use the old hose to pull the new hose through. If you are really lucky it will not be attached with rust inside the rockers.
You might get away without pulling the fuel tank.
Generally easier to pull from the front.
Buy a case of beer and get a strong friend to help.
    Good luck.

I would recommend one of the modern silicone based and coolant rated hoses that last practically forever. Lots of choices online.

The garbage hose Ferrari used lasted almost 40 years. And only lasted that short a time because a history of poor cooling system care. Plain old Gates hose will still be there working when we are all dead.
How much longer do you want it to last?

I would tell you exactly how old it is but the guy we are trying to help has decided he does not want us to know what kind of car he drives.

Sorry about that! It says on my profile it’s a 1986 328 GTS but I realize I should add it to my posts. Built Dec 1985 so this hose is 39 years old this month. Not too shabby really. Thank you for the pointers. I have been researching how other folks did it. Some say to put some silicone grease on the outside of the new hose as it enters the body, that sound like a good thing to do? And best method of attaching the new hose to the old hose for pulling through? Thanks again!

I used a lot of dish soap for lubrication. I wired the new hose to the old with a copper fitting inside the hose drilled for steel wire to tie them together. I pulled from the back to the front but it was easy standing in my pit. Never removed the fuel tank. Pull a bit then run to the back and push a bit. It took about a half hour for the pull itself as I recall.

Got any pics of that copper fitting setup you used?

    Think I fixed it...

Looks like that hose as a Ferrari part isn't available, somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Will go with Gates if not. Was only looking to get the Ferrari hose for judging's sake since I believe you will see the hose connected to the engine. That's a 5/8 hose?

The fitting is actually brass and is available at any hardware store plumbing department. It's for joining two pieces of PVC pipe together......like PECS. After joining the two hoses together be sure to wrap the joint well with Duct Tape. If the two hoses come apart you will be in for a heap of grief!!!!

Got it thanks. Do you remember the size for the interior of the pipe?

Nope........I used NAPA hose and just looked for a fitting that would fit inside tight.

Okay thanks. I’m still trying to figure out the hose size. I would take a piece of my old hose into the store, but the interior is so damaged there’s no way to know what the interior dimensions were. Just wanna make sure it fits over the fittings and seals well.

Below are my notes, I got the gates hose at O Riley I believe. On my 328 I did that job without removing the fuel tank, but on my 308qv the tank had to come out. You may consider changing the vacuum brake booster hose at the same time (I pulled them back to front together on 328 and 308).

Coolant hose is 0.625 inch (5/8 inch) and you need about 15 feet. While available from Superformance some prefer Gates Green Stripe (part number 28441)

Thank you very much that's much needed info. The brake booster hose (I assume it's the brake booster hose) comes up over the tank as well and looks to be a braided hose. Forgive my ignorance, but what's the reason for replacing it as well?

Because you don't want to do it later!!!! And don't be cheap and replace the brake booster hose with coolant hose like I did. Big mistake!!!
Also pulling both lines together I think was way easier.

Agree, replacing the vacuum hose is a "while you're there" type job. I pulled the heater and brake booster hoses together (they are both nearly 40 years old) without too much drama - I spliced the old hoses to new hoses and pulled from the front while my wife pushed from the back. Took all of 5 minutes but I had my fuel tanks out on this most recent attempt (the 308QV).

The brake booster hose is 1/2 inch ID and you can use vacuum hose from Napa / ORiley etc, or superformance. Agree you don't want to use heater hose for the vacuum line since it could collapse under the vacuum. There is also a check valve (one-way valve) on the vacuum line near the engine and it's critical to ensure that is facing the right direction.

There are also two A/C hoses on the other side of the car and I found it easier to pull both of those together too - both were original to the car and not suited for 134a conversion since the car came with R12.

15 feet is probably a bit more than you need, but hose is pretty cheap.

    Best of luck!

last note here is that for the heater hose 5/8 is 'close enough' but I think the specification is actually 16mm (recall 5/8= 15.9mm). I believe this is the long hose from superformance but I dont know if it looks stock - would confirm with them if a stock appearance is important.

Don't buy the hose from superformance. It's flimsy and if you're going to do this job you won't want to do it again.

Their booster hose is excellent though and just like the original.

Buy this heater hose if you are in the states.

Hell I still have a lot of this left if you're interested... just pay shipping. I won't be needing it again while I'm alive I'm sure.

Completed this job a couple weeks ago. Went off to without a hitch and the hose pulled through like butter. Connected it with some all thread, nuts, and mini hose clamps. Taped over it with duct tape then electrical tape. Little silicone grease over the tape. Thanks for the help everyone!
