How do the exhaust valves work for the 296? Do they open at a certain rev count? Or depending on the Manettino Setting? Or something else? Been looking around but haven’t been able to find anything concrete.
I played with this some yesterday and it seems based on some quick testing like they open at about 3k RPM in any manettino mode. Unfortunately while I don't mind it horribly, it means earplugs above 3k for my wife, and a gear or so above "sweet spot" gets a bit of a boomy resonance, though much less than on some stock and most modded cars. Fortunately it's somewhat manage-able as there's enough torque even a few gears up to be able to get reasonable acceleration (for me) 2-3k RPM even on the highway. Would prefer it was higher or that there was a valve controller option, though.
So I can understand, is the complaint that the car makes too much sound, too easily in a wide part of the rev range? I take this from when you wrote “I don’t mind horribly.” If this is true, then I would suggest the F8 is a better modern model for you.
Lo Tried the F8 for an hour, sounded bad and drove big vs. 296. Also because of the more flat tones it was harder to get the feeling of fun with the car without wanting to go way too fast. Love the engine sound and like the exhaust note as well, but the exhaust note when it seems like the valves are open can be a bit loud - "sweet" but loud.
yes the F8 doesn’t have much sound. I thought you were saying that you wanted a car with little sound. Out of all of my F cars, thr F8 was by far the quietest with the 296 being about average in volume (not frequency range and harmonics). Not sure what to suggest.
Well I've had the pre-owned 296 GTB over a week and now looking to order a new 296, so I don't hate it just wish the exhaust portion was a little softer or amplified at higher RPM - 4500-ish like most that I have. Wanter to prefer V12s - have a V12 Lusso I'm selling and F12/812 on brief drives sound even amazing-er than the Lusso (which sounds great) but still have traces of "heaviness" / weight transfer and slight front end floatiness coming off throttle that I don't enjoy. Had a 458 this year which sounded good but drove bigger and not quite as responsive as I wanted, and 488/F8 yes sound more muted unless I were to mod like this one - (2nd half of video)
I just started thinking about buying a Lusso to replace the current daily driver! Current daily driver is a Taycan, which is fantastic for a getup and go to an errand electric car. But I don't have that many errands. lol. I was wondering what the Lusso V12 sounded like compared to a non-GPF 812SF.
All this stuff is personal take obviously, to me both F12 and 812SF sounded better but Lusso V12 sounded amazing if you aren't listening back to back. On the other hand if you don't need passengers in the back or bigger trunk, the TC is pretty good I think even on F12 so if you have sane tires for the weather/temps you could consider F12 or 812 too...
I had a 2019 812SF, but sold it after arrival of 812C. So was thinking maybe Lusso instead of Taycan. But this is just an idea that has popped up this weekend.
Perhaps unpopular opinion but I like Model 3P better than Taycan as practical and a bit more tossable and fun, if a bit noiser for calls/music. (Ditto vs. Ioniq 5N) But I also tried Panamera Turbo S and Roma and find I most enjoy the new Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid as a daily. Back to Ferrari - At some point I need to try an 812C to see if that platform can handle like I'd like - not sure I'd actually spring for a C but if it was revelatory I'd consider getting a SF and trying to have it tuned up... Would be great to have 296 and a less attention-getting mid-front V12 I like as alternatives to non-Ferrai.
To me, the 812C is like a mega giga 812SF. It feels like it is in the 812SF family, just ultra powered and ultra refined with better handling. I also have an F12 TdF. The TdF feels discontinous in its driving experience to the F12. The TdF is one of my two favorite Ferraris to drive. The 812C is just amazing and I can generate more power, more quickly, and more safely and more easily to the road than the TdF. But the TdF is an incredible car to learn and unlock. The driving experience (which includes the fantastic sound) keeps all neurons awake and at 100%. I don't think you can get to an 812C driving experience performance by tuning up the 812SF. There are too many systems that were improved.
Lusso V12 sounds incredible and doesnt need to go fast at all to sound good. A valve controller, x pipe, and rear section upgrade is all thats needed.
Luckily, yes! Their stuff is not for me but they took an Ioniq 5N and 19 C4S and sold me an Evora GT that is much easier to manage the sound profile of on calls without sounding like "fancy car guy". Sort of relevant for some people who want to use cars for a daily but need to conduct business on the road.
i am with you there. we rep the 2 xtremes- some want the quiet option some want it loud. i want it really loud. they should have made it adjustable for sure.
