Correcting myself here: 0010 does have the same number 6 fonts as when Surtees won at the 1966 Belgian GP Spa Francorchamps race. Apologies for my error.

    See here.

They had to have at least 2 motors used in 0010 for 1966, a 24 valve and a 36 valve. They also had to have two exhaust systems as the one on the car is not the same as the one used early 1966 season on the 24 valve cars. So, both sets were stamped 0010 I would suppose. Would be interested in finding out what heads are on the car now. It looks like a 24 valve with injection between the cams instead of on the outside like all the photos show in 1966 on the 24 valve. Outside injection mounting would make the injectors stick up in the middle of the motor, like they do at SPA, Siracusa, Monaco ect.

0010 did not race with the injection system in between the camshafts with the 24 valve engine, but always in the middle of the Vee.

The exhaust system on the car seems to be the one for the 36 valve motor pointing straight back rather than up and back that the 24 valve motor used.

Why was the 24 valve motor put back in and what happened to the 36 valve motor it used in all its races from Monza?

What's the (racing) history of the 166 F2? It might be the most elusive Ferrari in Bernie's collection, can't find anything about the car online.

You may want to buy some proper Ferrari books. There is a ton of information that can/will never be found online.
118 is ex Ascari, ex Serafini, ex Marzotto, ex Rosier, ex Cupellini (he swapped it for an ex-Bandini Alfa GTA), ex Lucchini, ex Brunning, ex Grant, ex Mauries.

May I ask if there are any qualifications in the Classiche Red Book Certificate of Authenticity regarding the 24 valve engine/cylinder heads/positioning of the fuel injection? The car outwardly looks similar to how it last raced with a 36 valve engine with injection between the camshafts with matching bodywork/straight back exhausts. However, underneath the bodywork it has a 24 valve engine that it raced with only until before Monza '66, but 0010 never raced with a 24 valve engine with those heads with the fuel njection in that position. Even at the December 1965 Ferrari Press Conference the car had the fuel injection in the centre of the Vee.

    Zero.
Don't expect too much from a red book.

0010 last raced 2 October 1966 (Watkins Glen).

    Many thanks.

I was wondering if 0010 had possibly reverted to the 24 valve engine from the 36 valve engine for its last race at the 1966 United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, but it did have the 36 valve engine according to Jonathan Thompson and Alan Henry. Bandini was leading when the engine failed. Ferrari did not participate at the last 1966 F1 race in Mexico.

For the start of 1967 Ferrari used an improved 36 valve engine, still with twin plug/ignition, but the exhaust ports/valves were then moved to between the camshafts, along with the inlets, which called for the even more complex and spectacular spaghetti exhausts that were on top of the engine between the Vee. For the 1967 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the 48 valve single plug/ignition engine was introduced.

I don't know how long this will be on Youtube for, but here is the fabulous full 1966 John Frankenheimer film Grand Prix that stars many of our F1 heroes from the Golden Era of Motor Racing including Ferrari 312 F1 "66 #0010, where actual racing footage of it can be seen, which was used for the film driven by John Surtees and Lorenzo Bandini.

A favourite film for many of us here I'm sure.

I don't think Alan Henry’s book is correct about the early 1967 312 F1 36 valve engine having the exhaust valves and ports between the camshafts along with the inlets. They were certainly between the Vee later on in the 1967 season on the 36 valve engine before the introduction of the 48 valve engine, which had the inlets on the bottom side of the camshafts and the exhausts/ports between the Vee.

The BT45's and the BT46's were not the most successful but definitely one of the best sounding. Maybe the best sounding flat 12, with the Ferrari 312 flats sounding wonderful also. The Alfa's have a deeper howl to them. Compare that to the shriek of the Matra's in 1976 and the 1970 BRM V12's and you have the best sounding 12's ever made. Sorry Gurney Eagle.

Quite extraordinary that Audi Tradition have certified the Terry Wright Auto-Union now in the BCE collection and on offer here as #15. Before this it was well known that one C-Type show car was donated to the Deutsches Museum pre WW2 and was restored by VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) in the 1990s. A second C/D-Type was saved by the chairman of the Riga Museum from being scrapped in the late 1950s and remained there until the mid 1990s when VAG offered a new Crosthwaite & Gardner built replica and many millions of US$ and thats it. Rumours abound of another two early cars found in Russia but no confirmation. But this makes three C-Types in existence which is massive news!

I should also mention that there are three "genuine" D-Types in existence, one very original show car which Neil Corner bought out of Eastern Europe in the 1970s and was restored by Colin Crabbe before sale to the USA, then to the Samsung collection and today with the German National Automuseum aka the Loh collection. And the two cars found by the Karassiks in various states of completion, now both in the VAG collection.

Tim, I remember news of the Karassik find breaking. I also (years later) remember the authenticity of the Karassik cars being called into question.
From what you’ve been able to follow do you think Audi (internally) views them as authentic or ‘authentic’.
Obviously they paid up for them but from a cynical (I.e. corporate) perspective, you could justify paying real money based on the marketing value alone of being able to say that you have them even if you didn’t believe they were real. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

When Christies first offered one of the Karassik D-Types, way back in 2007 the implication was that one of the cars Karassik found was built around a few chassis tubes and various parts while the other was much more complete and recreated on a basically full chassis. It was the latter car offered at Christies after much backwards and forth with Audi, which installed no confidence in them nor the car. The Corner/ Samsung car was absolutely 100% original apart from having no motor but had no racing history!

One of the two Karassik cars was built on a basically complete chassis, the other only some bits and pieces on a semi complete frame. According to Christies it was the complete chassis car that they offered at Paris in 2007. Audi Historic confirmed this!

Bernie has a great memory. Would like to hear a lot more from him before he is gone, as Tom alluded to in the video. Those Vanwall's were amazing cars. Never liked the way they looked, but they sure could move fast. SPA 1958 winning car is my favorite, high tail and cast wheels on all 4 corners.
