I spent a day last week showing my son's mate the basic process for rebuilding an engine, in this case an LQ (iron block LS) that's destined for a Range Rover project. The engine looked grim from the outside and internally looked as if the oil had never been changed in it's life. To my amazement. once we had it stripped, the bearings and bores were in great shape - a testament to whatever the first oil fill was. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pistons are filthy but unworn. I'll give the bores a scuff with the hone and linish the crank. Otherwise, fresh rings & bearings, plus head, rod and main bolts. I've never seen such extensive baked on oil residue, the previous owner saved a motza on oil changes

Too cold to BBQ outside, forecast maximum in London for Saturday is 4 deg C and the roads are all gritted/salted, so no taking good cars out! Enjoy the sunshine...
Haha - I'm still here! Even made a flying visit to Perth in November for my father's 90th birthday, but didn't have a lot of spare time to catch up unfortunately. Only 6 days on the ground and most of that spent with family, except dumping some Ferrari books on Frank F and having a scary ride back to the family home with him...
In all seriousness Ian, what about a litre of kerosene and idle, change oil, repeat another couple of times? Great for cleaning out noisy lifters in my experience.
VT Commodore actually. Someone you and I both know thinks it is my responsibility to have their car serviced. A bit like your leaves story. At least Uterus is maintained regularly. Anything of mine is over serviced. At least car wise.
I certainly remember Simon! Jeez - was it really 2010?? Ride with Frank was in his 400i and nearly got wiped out at the first roundabout. He was busy talking rather than watching out for traffic... Anyway, will try not to leave it 16 years (!) before the next visit. Have to make some more organised plans, but been in the middle of house renovations etc etc for last couple of years, so not much 'out time' other than a few events here and there. Not even much in the way of long weekends in Europe
