I thought his conclusion was that the engine was absolutely fantastic but he was torn, not because of the haptics, which he clearly didn’t like (as so many don’t) but because the price delta over the similarly engined Lusso is so large. He found it hard to justify the price walk over the Lusso, but he also really loved the car, hence being torn.
I have over 8000 km in mine, I almost drive it daily unless I am in need of another car, I disagree with his assessment on the haptics, he’s a good reviewer and I have a lot of time for him, I have met him personally and he’s a VERY lovely guy but he’s a touch on the older side and new tech as we get older tends to get a bit tedious and annoying, I get that. The haptics do take a bit of getting used to, in a sense that you need to figure out what’s what and where it is but when you nail that and set the car up for yourself they are really a non issue in the day to day driving also there are corresponding physical buttons for almost 90% of the functions the car performs, you can drive the car with no hands off the wheel 90% of the time no issues. One thing that I have done, I have selected the haptics always on option in the menu otherwise you have to do a double take for each function and if you wait too long the buttons go back to sleep mode. If the option “always on” isn’t selected first tap wakes, second selects your desired function but if you aren’t aware of the mode of operation you think the system is non responsive after the first tap, now if you wait too long the system goes back to sleep and after you tap again your first tap wakes it up again and you tend to enter into this vicious cycle where you think the system is non responsive and that obviously leads to a tone of frustration but all it takes is to learn the system and how it works, in my case just like with any other new systems and interface, I had to learn it, get accustomed to it, set it up for myself and mode of operation and it works perfectly. I drove my car today again for few hours and after reading so many complainants on this forum about haptics most from people who don’t actually own the cars which is weird but anyway I decided to pay extra attention in particular to the operation of the car and how the haptics work or even how much I needed to use them and how many of the buttons I had to use are physical “mechanical” buttons and I am happy to say that aside of the Apple Car Play which takes over the entire dashboard which is silly I have had zero issues or annoyances with operating the car, to call it a disaster is really silly TBH.
Also, and what a lot of people overlook, is that the reviewers are in the car for a few hours. Maybe a few days at best. They’re not living with the car. So it’s much easier to judge things like driving position, haptics, etc. When you actually live with the car [or daily it like we do] it becomes something different and you’ve earned the right make that judgment call. But I understand autojournalists have to do what they have to do. It’s akin to movie critic. Most movies over time and several viewings you either grow to love or hate. But a critic has to walk in and get it all in one go. That said, I think I’m in favor of the return to buttons debuting on F80 wheel. Hopefully that will migrate to other models in future. The thing about UX systems on modern cars is that they’re often developed in-house by a completely different team than the ones actually out driving the car. I’m quite certain Ferrari test drivers would have an issue with the haptic disappearance thing, but by the time they designed that the car had probably already been thoroughly road tested, and the tech nerds just sat down and did their thing. I also wish there was an option to hit power once and fire everything up instead of hitting it once to power the electrics, and then hitting it again for enginestart.
tbh that sounds like an oversight from Ferrari not to make it clear to reviewers prior to delivery that the tap to wake can be disabled!
Yeah I’ll have to agree. Puro is unlike anything they’ve ever built; I see it sitting in the 500K range for quite some time. Maybe when Passione arrives it’ll undercut that margin if its in the same segment, but I doubt it.
I fully agree, I like your analogy that car reviewers are like movie critics, perfectly stated, personally due to some previous mistakes I have made by listening to them and some people online, I missed on some purchasing opportunities which I highly regret, I no longer listen to the opinion of car journalists as fact except for pure entertainment, online I want to read the opinions of those who own and live with the cars, those opinions are very valuable to me but at the end of the day nothing beats hands on experience. I would like to take this chance to discuss my Puro experience after almost 12 months of ownership and over 8000 km traveled. Full disclosure, in my case this car didn’t really fit in my fleet because it is 4 seater and I really or at least at that time I need 5 seats, at the time of initial expression of interest back in 2022 my SA and I had no idea if it was a 4 or 5 and I went for it hoping that it will be offered as 5, when I found out that it was 4 I was going to pull my order but I really liked the design and the fact that was a V12 and because I am an addicted car nut who finds it very hard to say no I decided to stay in and make a call closer to the day and once the car arrives. I took delivery early 2024 and I went in quite negatively mostly because I wasn’t sure how it will fit in my fleet, I need 5 seats as a family weekender sometimes 4, I like smaller DD’s because it’s just me driving around and after few days of driving it I didn’t really gel with the car mostly because I disliked the driver’s seat, shape and position, I couldn’t get myself fully comfortable in the car, I love sports carbon buckets and the front seat is anything but a bucket (to date I still dislike the front seat). After a week in and few hundred km I called my dealer and told him that I am strongly considering selling the car, he said that’s fine anytime but at the same time suggested I drive it some more and see how I feel about it before I make the final call. Since I went through the order and the acquisition troubles etc. I decided to give it a fair chance and drive it daily for a month or so. The more I drove it the more I started to gel with it, I actually really started loving in, seeing the reactions of my passengers and how much they enjoyed it, my kids loved it and every time we were going out they asked me to use the Puro, two of my kids are adults now and drive themselves and in the weekends unfortunately now we are four or less in the car in most instance so the Puro started to make more sense for our family use case and that was most important to me because I have enough selfish cars which can only be enjoyed two at the time, this one I can share at once with almost my entire family. After driving this car for this period of time I get it, this car is something else, the way it drives, handles, sounds, looks, how easy is to get in and out, how easy is to carry full grown adults at the back and for them to get in and out of the car, I had my friends in it, acquaintances etc. All sorts of sizes and shapes and they always fit comfortably with lots of leg and head room, and every single one of them loved the experience, frankly nothing gives me more joy than sharing my blessings with family and friends, seeing them enjoy and happy makes me happy. The way the car handles and corners no car its, size, weight and shape should drive the way this cars drives, it really defies physics, corners flat, chews the bends on twisty mountain roads, sticks and comes off a highway ramp, it’s mind boggling. I thought to myself, damn this is the perfect daily/family car and I want more of this, it’s truly a sports car I can enjoy with my family and friends, is it compromised as a pure sports car, yes it is but we already know that, it can not not be compromised but it’s the closest experience you will get to a thoroughbred sports car in this type of car which can also carry four adults and can be shared with family and friends, that’s an absolute riot. Ferrari nailed blending almost seamlessly those two different genres together into one, no other brand has been able to achieve this so far so eloquently, in my opinion as a one car garage for a sports car nut who can not have a two seater only this is THE car to have for anyone else who can afford to add one to their fleet it’s a no brainer also, obviously before the value and depreciation trolls jump in affordability is implied and assumed LOL Furthermore, few months into my ownership, privately through a very good friend I was offered $250k over my purchase price (not in the US) to sell the car, I rejected it without thinking twice about it, had he offered me that in the first week I would’ve taken it, glad he didn’t, I buy these cars to enjoy myself, this is the only vice I have and as a result of my hard work I treat myself to few toys, said toys don’t have to make sense financially they are gifts to myself, I know some have hard time seeing past that or even believing but I couldn’t care any less this is me and I do me. The moral of the story if I didn’t like this car, as per the above, I was fully incentivised financially to flog it off at a substantial gain, I know that eventually I might lose money on it but I honestly couldn’t care any less I enjoy it and as long as I feel that way until something else comes along which grabs my attention it will stay with me, as for making up your mind or being influenced on what this car is or any other for that matter, by taking advice from online trolls who don’t own nor live with these cars harping on about haptics and other quirky nonsense or journalists who have a brief moment with them or perhaps some biases for one reason or another I would be very careful doing so because you just might talk yourself out of something very special, I was about to do just that, I guess the bright side is that what you don’t know doesn’t hurt you it’s still a missed opportunity IMO. TLDR Puro strictly IMO is a very special car, try to live with it long(er) term before making a call, ignore the trolls and to a certain extent the journalists all IMO off course.
Weirdly Ferrari sees that function (turning them off) as a benefit because it avoids accidental tapping while driving and also switches those function off in order to give a more minimalistic cleaner look to the face of the steering wheel but just like socialism some ideas are better in theory than practice LOL
Good deal. I actually prefer the four seat setup. It feels exclusive and bespoke. Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston, they all have bench seats. Understandable for families, but two seats allow a level of individual comfort benches do not. And the Burmester is superb. Glad Ferrari got off the JBL train. My biggest issue is there needs to be a button on the console to open the rear doors. I have to roll down the window and tell people how to open the doors most of the time, or reach back and open them myself since they don’t see the door knobs. The doors are already powered, so a simple button would solve so much confusion.
I also like the 4 seat config but I need 5 for my family, I agree on the Burmester I have the system in all my AMG cars and it’s simply brilliant.
Best scenario is Taycan with noise insulated glass and Burmester. 1600 watts / 21 speakers / quiet car.
When the system debuted on the SF90 they left the touch areas active and it was an option to turn them off. A lot of the early feedback was the live all the time on the steering wheel was annoying. I think it really depends on how you are, because some people will prefer to have them active all the time. It's in the menus, so you can choose. Btw I thought I liked it better with the buttons not active but it is annoying having to wake it up, I might give it a try with them active all the time...
Why would they be annoying to people? It’s no different than having illuminated buttons on your steering wheel.
What several friends who got these cars early told me, and it was reported as well by the journalists, when you are turning the steering wheel it was just super easy to accidentally hit a function. I think there is a reason why they have a setting where you can tailor this behavior to your own taste. It’s just interesting to note they started out delivering these cars with the functions always active, but after some period of feedback decided the default would be with them needing a wake up.
No way I want to pay for that suspension replacement if there's a problem after warranty. On an SUV, the suspension gets the most abuse of any part of the car.
Pot holes, flooded streets, curbs, snow drifts -- that's why you buy an SUV. Because you wouldn't think of taking a sedan or sportscar through this kind of daily abuse. You don't buy an SUV to sit in your garage and collect dust.
Good point. And that's a big reason why GTC4 Lusso likewise so often suffers flat tires and bent wheels.
So does the FF- the OEM tire spec is under sidewdlled. You'd have to wonder why they would spec cars like that, when the F12 is better. Its not so much the extra weight, its really the sidewalls. The PS has a more advanced suspension, a bit better sidewall, and also less narrow front tire, and it seems to handle bumps better. While it is fairly new technology so the cost is a concern, I remember when the 599 came out and people freaked out- just imagine the cost to fix... well, is anyone talking about any of the cars from the 599 onward now specifically discussing the suepsnion. Even the aforementioned Lusso, you're not talking about widespread reports of suspension failures/ replacements. I dont think people will really use these as a typical SUV, more like a sporty wagon.
It's obviously a case by case situation but I have never accidentally touched one of them while driving and mine are always on and if you do no missiles are being deployed
