Finding out original interior color of 308

That's actually sorta true - they cannot access them in that room. The 80's etc are in a separate place. When they pulled mine for me to look at they had to be brought from another building into that little red room in the Classiche Department. I saw the box they were pulled from on a table in the back of the room. I talked about how I was able to get so lucky in another thread somewhere around here.

Apparently those boxes with numbers on them that our cars would fall in are just display items on those shelves. No idea what's in them but our records aren't.

 

Fascinating. Glad to see this resource exists. I had tried to get one of those certifications back in early 2000 with no luck.

It lists my exterior as Rosso Chiaro. That is currently my exterior color but mine was repainted. I know it was originally silver. It still has the paint code sticker on the rear lid showing Argento Auteuil 633-6-031 and you can see silver in some of the overspray areas. It was painted sometime in the 80s because the DMV records I traced back that far showed red in a late 80s title. So now I'm wondering where this info comes from. Could this record have been updated by FNA at some point along the way?

 

Is it possible your car was originally red then repainted silver then back to red?

I have checked a few records and the colours match what I have from other sources. However, the Dealer/Importer shown is very often wrong.

It seems that the records come via Bacchelli & Villa in Modena who are part of the Mattioli Auto Group that owns Ferrari Beverly Hills etc. (and the contact is an email address at Bacchelli & Villa rather than Ferrari Beverly Hills). I doubt FNA or anyone in the US is involved with the data. But clearly something has gone wrong when they uploaded the data at least as far as the Dealer/Importer field is concerned.

 

That’s an interesting idea. Hadn’t considered it. This thread did spur me to contact Ontario Motor Vehicles and see if I can get a vehicle history search. I talked to a very friendly person who couldn’t help because the VIN is only five digits. So I’m going to send in a letter along with some vehicle information and perhaps they will send me the original Ontario title. From the titles that I have, one was issued in New York in 1984 and listed the car as gray, which I assume they used for silver cars or was just a mistake. The next title was in New Jersey dated 1987 and showed the car as red. The original title should tell the tale if I can get it

 

Canadian cars don't have titles like in the US - the annual provincial vehicle registration document is the only proof of ownership for Canadian cars, so for cars sold in Canada a title document like in the US is never provided.

(If you look at BaT auctions, cars located in Canada will usually have a mention in the listing about the lack of a separate title document and that provincial registration documents are the official proof of ownership document here)

A little surprising to see the dealer/importer of my US car listed as KROYMANS HILVERSUM BV in the Netherlands. Does it make sense to anyone? Shouldn’t it be a US dealer for a QV USA?

 

I can’t answer if it makes sense or not, but I noticed this about one of the recent 308s listed on BAT; it was a US car showing delivery in France. So whatever the story, yours isn’t the only one.

Hmmm, interesting. Lists my former 308 importer as Modern Classic Motorcars. Never heard of that one and I was never able to trace it back to original importer or dealer.

It was nice to be able to get the heritage and color certificates back in the day. Still have mine for my former car.

 

Do you mean your is a US specs car ? If so, could be an US guy who lived in Netherlands at that time and ordered his car there before back in US ( car & owner ) ?
So the car was delivered new by Kroymans in Netherlands but with US spec.

 

Yes I guess those would be possible situations where an eventual US owner would get delivery of a US-spec car in Europe and bring it over himself. It's also possible that because the US was a huge market for the 308, some European dealers would stock US-spec cars so they could meet demand from US buyers (and ship them over?) . A little how some of the bigger watch dealers get better allocations of popular watches and end up selling them outside of their own market ?

I don't think so and I never heard about think like this. My previous message is just a assumption in case the buyer has asked for US spec car because he want go back in US with it

 

IIRC, Modern Classic Motorcars was Casino mogul Bill Harrah's dealership/western US importer located in Reno, NV. Road & Track magazine tested his personal 365 GTB/4 Daytona when they first arrived in the US. Not long after that I was driving my Jaguar XK-140 eastward on US 50 (pre interstate days) near Reno when the bright red Daytona approached from the other direction. Mr Harrah flashed his lights and waved as we passed, I recognized his front license plate and it made my day for sure.

Cool, all I could find was a current dealer named the same.

 

It was quite common in those days for a car to be a 'tourist' delivery. A person either living or on a long holiday in Europe would get a car delivered wherever they were in the intended destination spec, drive it around for a year or whatever, then ship it home. In many countries this also allowed them to dodge import duties.

 

Have a look at this recently posted registry by Beverley Hills Ferrari. Put your chassis no in reh search box and it will give you build date, original external and internal colours.

As far as the doors goes, that's a good question. The guy who redid the seats in 21567 before I bought it claims to have only done the seats. He and past owners all claimed the door panels as original, but they don't have the knock out plug for an emergency window crank, so I've always wondered about that.

I would also suspect that if it doesn't have the knock-out plug for the window crank, it's not an original panel.

Their registry is full of errors. Not sure what it is drawing the info from.

 

Consensus is that it is from the original Ferrari paper records digitised at some point in the past.

I have been through the 308GT4 and 208GT4 records and comparing them with what was known already find them to be pretty accurate

 

I have been going thru it from the beginning on 308's and saw a date that was obviously keyed in incorrectly. Simple human error. No big deal, but I went back to fill in the spaces on two glass Red Book 308''s and they didn't match up to the registry. I just checked again and the mistake was on my part, I accidentally transposed the chassis numbers.

Knee jerk reaction when I thought there were two big mistakes. My fault, not theirs.

 

Thanks to the good people at Ferrari of Austin, they were able to get official information from the factory. Looking into a build-sheet but got this so far...

• External color: Grigio Metallizato 6336031 Salchi
  
• Internal: Pelle Nera VM 8500 with black carpets and upholstery

So that clears up the color question both exterior and interior. Also confirms the BH info was correct on Internal Color and (likely) dealer and it was incorrect on external color for whatever reason.

What's "wide wheels" on a 308?

That's great. Interesting the variety of different exterior colour names. I believe 6336031 should be Argento or Argento Metallizato rather than Grigio Metallizato but it is Ferrari so who knows. I guess the important thing would be the code and that matches what is on your paint sticker even if the name doesn't.
