I have the exotic car gear ones. They are very good quality and have metal reinforcement in the area where it connects to the intake but they are covered in carbon fiber so you don't see the exposed metal. They are Scuderia style see pic of my car below.

The Kline ones are more like the oem factory non-carbon in look but have metal reinforcement that is not covered in carbon.

I personally don't like the exposed metal look or I would have swapped mine out the moment the Kline became available. I don't think anyone makes the pattern of the factory carbon 430 air boxes, which have a set of swoops in them which I think actually look best on the car but are very very rare.

There's a factory set on eBay right now for just under $2k but needs some attention.

I had someone who refinishes carbon look at the pictures of the set on ebay. He said the damage is pretty far into the epoxy so they will never be perfect. I'll hold off on these. If you ever see another set in better condition, shoot me a PM

I assume all these airboxes are roughly the same on their interior --- but are the exterior differences between something like a Kline (with lateral indentations on the exterior) vs OEM (with longitudinal indentations) vs 'others' (with no indentations, and more 'bulbous') meaningful? Are the *exterior* differences simply aesthetic preference ?

For the OEM airboxes, both carbon and standard have horns to tune the sound. Haven't seen that for any of the aftermarket.

I was wondering how much that would change the sound when I swapped mine out to the Kline. Didn't really notice anything really. Curious if it would be worth grafting the stock tubes on the new lids though.

I did hear a tone difference when I swapped my OEM airboxes for the aftermarket ones. It's not at every RPM, but there is a difference. Obviously, when my exhaust valves are open I don't hear a difference because all I hear is my Kline exhaust.

    That's probably why I didn't hear any difference :D

Has anyone done that carbon dip for the interior parts? I have a local company that will dip/apply a carbon film to the existing parts. Thinking about for the engine bay side panels.

I haven’t done it, but I’ve seen it on many parts. It looks like a vinyl wrap and not CF unless you’re standing 10ft away, especially around curved areas. I’d rather have stock boxes than CF dipped boxes, at least in my opinion.

I have some associates near me that do this hydro dipping process. Which is almost a wrap. They do a lot of custom automotive work. Here is a video of that process on a larger rear spoiler.

One of my earlier vettes had this done on interior parts by the prior owner. It was pretty successful.

Dipped stuff does not look real close up. This is a Ferrari and the expectation is no fake intakes and no fake carbon.

Don't get me wrong dipped can still look nice, but when next to real carbon, you can tell. My son has a dipped piece of trim on his steering wheel in his Mercedes C350 and it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the AMG carbon inside the car. He even asked me to order him the replacement piece in real carbon so we can swap it out in the spring.

Thats good intel Corey. I have seen the real carbon panels in the engine bay before. But you might be on to something, that it might not be worth doing. I view aesthetics as mostly user driven, but I might not be happy with the result then either.

Fun fact. The Diablo has a real cf plate somewhere around the shifter that’s covered in leather but the very visible gauge surround is a hydro dipped piece of brass.

It has been more than 25 years since I owned a Diablo, but I don't remember the gauge surround being either real carbon or hydro dipped. I remember it being painted black.
