I’m gong to take a punt and guess that the price of a deal on minerals (which, by the way, Ukraine suggested first as compensation for US financial support. I’m not surprised you don’t know this - you won’t hear it on the ABC) will be a guarantee of US protection for a long time to come.

Putin may well end up regretting the deal that ends up being made.

The solution for how to treat aggressors in this day and age is relatively simple: isolation.
As soon as any country (eg Russia, Syria, whoever) commits aggression, shut them down by:
1. Closing all borders of the aggressor country - nobody allowed out or in (any citizens outside at the time are stuck outside); all planes, ships, vehicles etc outside the country are quarantined where they are. No planes, ships, vehicles of the aggressor allowed to enter any other country.
2. Trade in either direction ceases immediately.
3. All external finances (public and private) are frozen

The citizens of the aggressor would quickly turn on their leaders and there would be a reset.
We didn't have the means to do this 80 years ago, but we do know. United Nations (in fact all non-aggressor nations) needs to get off its arse.

You guys downunder are very fortunate. You are a long way away from all of this. It's much more of a concern the closer you get to the epicentre of it all. Russia and it's 'allies' are conducting war on multiple fronts - damaging undersea cables, interrupting GPS signals, posting false info on all sorts of media, 'buzzing' international borders with military aircraft, trying to buy elections and political parties (see Moldova or Germany) and generally causing problems. They have assassinated people here in the UK (and Iran has had a good go at it too).

Yes, Europe rested on it's arse for too long and didn't make enough effort, but I think Trump and his cronies who are screwing the US taxpayer already are not helping the whole cause. They don't seem to realise that they have just thrown away a whole lot of 'soft power'. After all, Russia has had 3 years of their military being degraded and despite all the noise are in a much weaker position than they were 3 years ago...thanks to Putin...

Unfortunately, long term strategic thinking doesn't seem to be a big part of the current US administration. Hopefully the Congress can start pulling their weight as well...
