Ha-Ha!!! Very good analogy. Then again, putting a 308 or 328 in a Honda, might be an interesting idea - if you could find a Honda ready for a transverse installation! One of the better replies on AlfaBB was: Image Unavailable, Please Login And in reply to that was another... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think you would have to make a custom (lower) cross member and fabricate a different radiator that fits in the nose. Then I'm not sure what you do about the airbox. Alfa Spiders with Webars are side drafts, as is the Fuel Injection air filter. You'd have a better chance trying to put in a V6.
Hi Tommy! Been awhile since I've been here. The motor or the car? The car is the first year of the rubber (Yuk!) bumpers - the same model/color Muhammad Ali had. It came with a factory hardtop and (BION) A/C ! The engine of course, is a '75 as it came out of the GT4. I posted this as a prank on AlfaBB awhile back. Life has been crazy for the past 4 years and I'm finally settled and just started finishing the rebuild on the Alfa . I copied this first post in that thread here, just for a laugh - or maybe two. Funny thing - here, like there, people seem to be taking this as a serious endeavor. If it was, I'd be sure to have followed-up on getting that Harbor Freight engine-bay stretcher! Cheers, D.
I did a little work on and drove an Alfa 105 Spider that had a Fiat Dino engine and trans installed. Ruined the car. Handled like crap and was not much faster than a stock 1750. 105 Alfas are great cars just the way Alfa built them.
I've talked with Anthony Rimicci, (only half kidding) about putting a V8 in an Alfa; but, a Hartley V8 -- not a Ferrari. The small size of the Hartley would easily fit and probably wouldn't take much more room than the 2.0. ...and would easily have 4-5x the HP of the 2.0.
I once had the opportunity to buy a Dino sedan for about $6k. At the time, I had no idea what I was looking at.
I still have a '72 Spider that we bought way back in 1980. There were a few that people put Alfa V6's in but I kept mine completely stock, didn't paint it red or slap carbs on it, still has the Spica mechanical fuel injection that allowed Alfas to get through much of the 70's with virtually no slapped on smog contraptions.
I loved my 1750 Spyder. It was a lot of fun to drive and very reliable. That transmission was like butter. My girlfriend at the time, always wanted to drive it. Unfortunately, rust got the better of it.
Funny....I wanted a 1750 Spider when I first got into sports cars. Both the examples I drove had bad 2nd gear syncros though, so I passed, ended-up with an X1/9, and ignited my love affair with mid-engine Italian cars. Unfortunately, those 2nd gear syncros are the only thing I can think about every time I see a Spider any more. @DavidDriver - Dropping a Hartley V-8 into a Spider sounds ridiculous - in a good way - but don't they put out about the same amount of power as the similar RPE V-8 (420 - 450hp), so roughly 3x the HP of the 2.0 Dino? -Dave
Years ago i used an engine bay stretcher on an x1/9 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login On the 308 I use an engine compressor which I liked a lot better than the engine bay stretcher Image Unavailable, Please Login
Close! I'm remembering 1965 Cadillac Eldorado , 472ci (that I always called a 500), with like 1976 single plane intake, 750 holley, , aftermarket cam, about 500hp...the Fiadillac. I used the whole front sub-frame. nearly undrivable because on those the trans was along side the engine and the axles ahead of the engine mass center whuihc took most of the weight off the front wheels,...touch the throttle and the front wheels were off the ground. just an awful creation Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just re built my 1978 308 GTS. Getting ready to add fluids and turn the key. Hope it starts. lol a 308 carburetor engine fits into a 1978 body 308 fits in where the flywheel and clutch is to the left side of the body you should call a Ferrari service tech at a Ferrari sales and service shop
Dave - I was referring to the 4-cyl Alfa 2.0 which has about 115-120HP. The Dino 2.0 (rare) is 175HP but is a V8. Yes, the Hartley 420-520 sans a turbo. Still, way too much power for the Alfa spider though. One of the best things about the Alfa though, as Ragtop1 says, is the transmission. It shifts like a race car. You have to shift with high RPMs, in order to keep from porpoising, and once you learn to get it correct, you can shift so smoothly that you can't feel the change from gear-to-gear. It takes practice, but it's so much fun, once you learn how. Very spirited driving, and it just loves the corners! Image Unavailable, Please Login Next in-line is this one! OK, gotcha....since we were talking about front-engine applications, I assumed the Dino you were referring to was the 2.0L Dino V-6 which in FIAT guise gave a factory-rated 160hp. Is that an Alfa motor you're currently working on? Judging by those pistons, looks like it will be a hot one! - Dave
They're just the newer Motronic pistons 10:1 vs the originals at 9.0:1 The bump will be from 115-120HP to 125-130HP. I have Spica injection now and I may change that to Webers in the future. If I do that, the HP bump will be slightly higher 135-140HP and if I added a 10.5mm or 11.1mm cam those numbers would be 145-150HP. I don't really need that though. I enjoy driving the car with 115-120 in my '84 and got slightly over 30mph. I used to drive that back-and-forth from LA to Alameda (working on contract in the Bay Area) every-other- week working a 9/80 schedule and those numbers are pretty solid. I did that for 3-1/2 years working at C&H Sugar. I put a LOT of miles on that car - I really miss it too. But this new (to me) one is a '75, with a factory hardtop and A/C. So I can make this one nicer and I'll never need to pay to get another smog test here in Calif. with it.
