Thanx for good input and info. It will help lots of owners who are sick of the 2008 maps that are supplied by Ferrari Still small things are not clear for most of us: how to remove the lether part over the speedo etc. The handling is so unfriendly as it has no touchscreen ... and too many gimmicks must be done if something has to be changed. I drive a lot of rallies in my 458 and I therefor stick to my Ipad Mini (with gps/sim slot) also connected to my phone (Samsung S24 Ultra). Very happy with that. Wishing yo all the best ! Question. I'm in the market for a car and the 458 is on the short list. Does it matter if the car is optioned with the comically expensive "iPod connector" or not? Being able to play music from my phone is important to me, less so navigation. I don't fully understand the difference between cars that have the iPod connector, cars that don't, and cars that have the mod mentioned in this thread. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Edit: Alternatively I see these cars have bluetooth. Can I simply play music over bluetooth and then have it pause for a call and then revert back to music? Seems like a simple request of a bluetooth thing to do but from what I've been reading....I have concerns. lol
This module works with both iPod and non iPod-ready cars. I looked into but personally don't need all of the functionalities of car play in my 458. I do have the iPod connector so I opted for the Bovee adapter that plugs into the iPod connector: https://www.viseeousa.com/products/ferrari-458-spyder-bluetooth-music-a2dp-interface-adaptor-for-in-car-ipod-integration ^ This allows for BT streaming from the phone. My biggest issue with it is that I have to completely turn on/off BT on my iPhone every time I get into the car, or it won't connect. Since I'm heavily making use of BT in my car and I'm a bit tired of the constant disconnects at each startup, I'm likely going to purchase the BT module that plugs into the back of the audio unit in the glove box: https://mysupercarexpert.com/products/ferrari-458-2009-2015-oem-aftermarket-bluetooth-solution?srsltid=AfmBOoo4Okv9MzZuJzDhzC8OV6p11qeT3EEGr3gbOWmDfZSEFO0s0NV2 Hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing such a detailed write up Mikey. Can you confirm if the steering wheel buttons work as normal - can you change the volume and switch to the next track? There was someone in the 812 section who just added Carplay and couldn't get the steering wheel buttons to work, was wondering if its the same with the 458.
To be honest I forgot about the audio controls on the back of the steering wheel. I habitually just use the knobs up on the dash. But I just tried it while playing an album from my iPhone. Right side switched tracks as expected. Left side had no effect on volume. Car was ignition on only and the trickle charger was still plugged in so not sure if that had any effect on why the left side volume didn’t work.
The latest gadget from China, if I use my car as a daily driver, I’d add this. Image Unavailable, Please Login
$1700 plus I'm sure duty / import tax when it reaches US customs, so probably $2K. I found it on ebay but need to find the actual site with more information. i.e. can it be installed with the other carplay module already in the car? I wouldn't want to give up maps on my right hand DIC screen. But would be very cool to offer a passenger side display for vehicle telemetry. I also found that Ferrari offers a similar option as aftermarket install, vehicle telemetry only, no carplay in that one. Not sure the cost.
here is the one I have been thinking about. Lots of install details on youtube as well. https://kks-supercar.com/products/ferrari-carplay-android-auto-module?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvvO7BhC-ARIsAGFyToVBNTecTl4sDVPhajFvZY1dixfRK9O-AsV1ff2zADVD7xbAZLleBMIaAnB8EALw_wcB
KKS thing installed in my 458 is working well. Only issue is the voice control doesn't properly work - since it tries to use the car's microphone via the car's bluetooth.. it is able to transfer for calls, but not Siri / voice controls. Anyway - it's great for Music and Navigation - acceptable for calls - and not functional for back and forth voice texting.
did you hook up a separate mic for the install? The most recent video installs show a hardline integration to the factory mic.
Can you send me a link? I was exploring this idea with my mechanic but we didn't see any video or get feedback from them that it was a good idea.
The unit I installed from MySupercarExpert uses the OEM car mic and Siri works just fine. don’t know who kks is but the unit looks similar.
I can see the confusion - they released a video a year ago leveraging the aftermarket mic, followed by this one a month later that taps into the OEM mic.
Hi, Great write up, I purchased the same CarPlay unit from the same folks. I have a Roma so my install was a bit different than yours. I also did it myself, it took me less than 30 minutes as I did not have to remove anything from the car to access the head unit. My head unit is located under the steering column, and I had clear access to the brown power wire harness which was an easy plug and play swap. The challenge for me was reaching the blue video wire as it was not easily accessible and that’s what consumed my 30 minutes. Once installed, I ran into the same problem that you described above, which is I had no directions from this point forward. I watched so many videos and was so confused but finally was able to figure out how to get my phone and the CarPlay system to work. The following morning I went out to use my car and found my screen was black. For me to switch over to CarPlay mode I have to press and hold the top left corner of my screen, which activates the CarPlay system. The system activated fine from the black screen however, I cannot get back to the Ferrari factory screen as every time I switch out of CarPlay to go back to the factory screen it stays black. I have reached out to the folk's I purchased it from you via email multiple times and they have not been responding to me. Have you or anyone else reading this forum run into this issue and have a suggested fix? I am assuming it is as simple as some setting on the CarPlay unit but I am at a loss. Looking for any help anyone has to offer. Thank you.
I just ordered this unit from eBay for my F8, hopefully it's the same one as installed by some of you on here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/356589599434
If it is the FRI CarPlay then yes, you did order the same one. It’s a great system but frustrating that they do not come with instructions.
Update, never mind the system is now operating as should be! When I went to use my car after typing this the factory screen was on and the CarPlay was able to switch back and forth. Thank goodness all is right again! If anyone is in the NJ/PA/DE area and needs help installing one in a Roma I am happy to assist.
Glad it’s working! Marco is usually pretty responsive, I actually spoke with him on the phone back when I was providing feedback to him on the 458 install. I hope he’s ok or maybe just on holiday.
