Like Gurney's Eagle, several cars had a "short nose" at Monaco to improve cooling in those days.

A terrific shot, it illustrates both the beauty and danger of old Monaco.

When Bandini crashed on lap 82, his car went thru the hay bales and caught one of the capstans visible right along the waterfront. This flipped the car over and escaping fuel caught fire. Bandini was apparently knocked unconscious and was unable to extricate himself from under the car. The highly regarded Monaco fire crew did an abominable job of putting out the fire and getting the unfortunate driver out.

I believe the hay bales also caught fire which contributed to his demise and was one of the primary reasons why they were not used after that time.

Alain and Gilles, two of the greats in my book--and two very different driving styles. Thanks for posting.

I agree. The cars looked like race cars, they sounded incredible and possibly most importantly, they were capable of close racing.

I saw young Fernando race in that debut season. He was impressive then and now--the F1 Ironman.
