Eventually I just bought it - probably the prices are still on a downtrend (so it should be possible to get a lower price in the future), but €1,220 including shipment seemed fair given the recent catawiki result of more than €900 for a less than perfect copy. After all my recent orders (I will report later ) I will probably be quieter for a while...
So I received my copy #831 bought at Ladenburg - it was advertised as in "very good condition", and while it is not completely perfect, I believe this description was fair.
Horton's offers a not perfect copy for GBP1,750.00 I guess you did ok with your copy. Finding a mint copy of 30 year old book is really hard and probably very expensive.
Finding a copy in a better condition may be very challenging indeed; another question is the price - there are relatively "many" copies advertised for sale from €1,500 to €2,000 but at those prices it seems none are actually selling. So establishing a "market price" is difficult (as there seems to be no market at all, the prices expectations being too different between potential sellers and potential buyers). That's not really relevant for me now, since I'm not going to buy a cheaper copy if it becomes available, and will probably not sell my copy anytime soon.
Just as an FYI, I bought mine around 2020 or so ago for around GBP 1.800 (mint with the outer carton- see post #102) and that was a fair / maybe a fraction high price back then. Years later I'm still happy with my purchase.
Took the plunge and purchased blue cloth version no 152 for 1300 quid from e Bay.It is in excellent condition and pages very clean.Hard to believe it is 30 years old. Superb book, photographs stunning. Why did I leave it so long?
FIC cloth and leather in upcoming auction! both same estimate… https://bid.goodingco.com/lots/view/1-AF7HFO/ferrari-in-camera-from-ascari-to-villeneuve-as-recorded-by-geoffrey-goddard-with-doug-nye-no-2751000 https://bid.goodingco.com/lots/view/1-AF7HE4/ferrari-in-camera-from-ascari-to-villeneuve-by-geoffrey-goddard-with-doug-nye-leather-bound-edition-no-064
For the above-mentioned copies, the regular edition went for $800 and the leather edition for $2700. The overall results for books at this sale were not particularly great. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
FIFY Add the 25% buyers commission and 10% California sales tax to these numbers. It might help to explain the dismal results.
2.700 plus fees in my eyes is much more a low number than a good seller result, one of the greatest Ferrari books in a rare version and handcrafted in high quality and i thought it will go for the double result… auctions, always a surprise…
The economy is currently not perceived as very good, as far as I understand - it does not necessarily mean people do not have money to spend, but it means people expect relatively low prices for whatever they buy (company shares, used 296, collectible books...)
So very true! Plus, the shippers Gooding works with (Goodman Shipping/Box Brothers) are absolute thieves. I was charged about $1400 for pickup, packing, shipping, insurance, service fee, credit card fee, etc. the last time I bought items (and not particularly heavy ones, at that) from them. Whatever you bid can easily be doubled, or more, once all the additional charges are added on.
A 275 GTB rear windshield went for $31- I say again Thirty-one dollars- in this auction. https://www.goodingco.com/lot/rear-window-for-ferrari-275-gtb/
There were some screaming deals in some of the book lots(I bought a few). It's the same old story--books are heavy and are expensive to ship.
Good for you! It really was a bizarre sale. Some nice things got given away, yet junk went for crazy prices. My favorite was the copy of the Ferrari Anniversary: 60 Years of Ferrari in America book that went for $3625. I thought I had been had when I paid $100 for my copy a decade ago, as it is nothing more than a hardbound copy of the issue of TOFM that came out at the same time. Craziest of all, is that this turd of a book is still in stock with Ferrari dealers for less than 1/6th of the price paid, which I would say is still way too much... https://www.goodingco.com/lot/ferrari-anniversary-60-years-of-ferrari-in-america/ https://www.ebay.com/itm/156481930322
I just secured a mint copy of the particular TOFM no. 26 (including supplement with Italian translation) for 38 euros including shipment
Well, here are two more linked below. One for $425, the other for $525. Either one, I would say, is way too much for a nothing book. Especially so, as Sven mentioned above, when the same thing can be had for EUR 38 or similar with TOFM 26. https://www.ebay.com/itm/256528218237 https://www.ebay.com/itm/156481930322
