Surprised this hasn't migrated to a discussion about the ZR1 - that is a LOT of car for 180K.
Key word: internet. They may not have ‘wanted’ to go, but it was time. They got buyouts, so no harm done other than bruised egos.
As good as the corvette is, it isn't an Italian exotic I'm every measurable way the c8 z06 can be better but it won't give you the "specialness" of a prancing horse. Everything you mentioned could well be true, more daily liveable, more performance at the limits, etc. but that's hardly why anyone buys a ferrari in the first place. Want a super capable daily? 911 turbo is and always has been the answer.
I have a z06 and performance wise they are close and z06 engine sounds great. Ride quality goes to 488.
In the days when Japan came up with cheaper, better, faster cars to compete with the 911, they won. By "naked" numbers. But as my (female) friend back then said: Whatever, it's still not a Porsche (note: Porsch-uh, with an "e" when you pronounce it correctly). Do you want the (better) Vette, or a Ferrari?
Why not both ? I don't think the "numbers game" plays anymore in the age of electric cars and sheer availability of blistering performance. Way back in the day, and I mean WAY back. Supercar performance was actually unobtainable. Now anyone with a used BMW and 10 grand to throw at bolt ons and tunes can get Ferrari/Lambo/Mclaren/Porsche performance in highway roll races, electric cars will crush most supercars on unprepped surfaces out of a dig, and honestly my MX5 is more enjoyable in the twisties than my 458 and I imagine that is probably true against lambos/mclarens as well (if not an MX5, a Lotus Exige/Elise or Cayman GT4 certainly would be). Today (and maybe always) a Ferrari or Lambo or Mclaren or whatever is just a statement piece. The numbers and maybe even the actual driving experience doesn't matter. It's a Birkin or Daytona, it cannot be measured by what it's ostensibly for. No one evaluates the desirability of a Birkin by it's ability to be a bag or the Daytona it's ability to tell time.
Currently have a 2024 Z06 and am thinking of trading for 488 Spider. Which car is faster is hard to tell. Once you get below 3 sec to 60 who knows, The transmission on the 488 shifts much faster then Z06. Steering goes to the 488. Vette steering is sort of numb. Also drove the Artura which has the best steering of the 3. The 488 steering is not far behind Artura. Tech goes to the vette as it’s newer. Ride quality is pretty close but I think it goes to the 488. The vette has super wide tires so it tends to tram on uneven pavement. Artura has good ride quality. Engine sound I would give to the vette except at idle. Tons of snap crackle pop on vette. The 488 did not have the snap ,crackle or pop, but th dealer says it does when it warms up. Artura is not good or bad. It’s sort of there. I really wanted to go with the Artura. I have driven the 488 twice and Artura twice. In the end I liked the 488 better. Just seemed like it is more of an event. More special. Artura seemed more clinical. Am I nuts to trade Z06 for a 488? Nothing wrong with z06.
I have a 488 and just purchased the Z06. The Z06 is amazing so far. Sound is incredible and performance is everything you would want it to be. Saying all of that, it is not similar to the 488. The 488 is much smaller and lower to the ground. I also think the 488 handles better as well. The Z06 is also a much more comfortable ride.
Im particular with my toys so its parked right next to the 488 in the garage...plus i like to have the top off and saves me a step parking it with the top already off.
I would definitely consider getting a C8 Z06 if it had electric motors in the front for AWD. The Z06 is low on torque and will not give exhilarating street performance. I would consider the C8 ZR1, but would probably go for a Mclaren 750S. The Zora will be the beast; however, by the time one is available Mclaren may have a hybrid replacement for the 750S which would be tempting. The C8 Z06 is a great car, but leaves alot to be desired IMO.
I have a z06 and I thought the overall ride was more comfortable in 488 with bumpy rode setting. Of course it was a quick test drive so hard to tell without more seat time. That was my initial impression and the 488 did not tramline like z06
You might not have had enough seat time with the 488. I just drove the z06 6 hours back from the dealership i got it from and actually had to drive the 488 to the nearest dealer to me and that was 2 hours away. I can tell you the Z06 was much more comfortable and the 488 for sure "tramlines". Both awesome cars for sure. To mention the comment above, i think it has more than enough torque around town. The E-Ray would be the option the poster would be looking for, but the sound isn't close to what the Z06 produces. I'll say this, if you never owned a Ferrari, the Z06 would be the ultimate car for that person, but owning a 488, I know what the Z lacks, but it still doesn't take away from it. I was actually talking to my wife about the two cars and said if i never had the 488 and just had the Z06 than I would have no want to even go the ferrari route since the Z checks all the boxes I would need.....but I'm glad I have both haha
So what does the z06 miss? Would u trade a Z06 for a 488. That's what I am thinking. Sort of weird trading a 2024 z06 for a used 488. Am I making a mistake?
