Used to be the most exciting race in the early 99-early 2000s. Not anywhere near as exciting with theses huge cars.

huge cars + no more refueling meant all the lead car had to do was win at slowest pace possible. Drive slowly, backs car 2 into the rest of the field, the moment he pits all you need to do is a banzai inlap and so long pit crew doesn't mess it up, you come out in the lead and win with ease.

The 2023 race was so, so good though. Max and Alonso playing chicken with the ''I'll pit after you pit" and the Weather was awesome. Alonso pulled the trigger late which forced Max to do another lap...when it was CHUCKING down, and he had to go do a fast lap, on slicks. Crazy!

Remember people, this race NOW requires a mandatory 2 stop as per the FIA rules.

Ridiculous. Lose track position twice to pit then what?
Last year leclerc winning was a freaking joke. Maybe one pass entire race.

This race was dropped during COVID- Was not missed at all. Not even noted in the press. Its a charity event race for the end of the season. These cars are actually almost too large for Imola as well. SUV's should not be raced LOL :)

Good point; strategists must be losing their minds.

What strategy is left when even the number of pit stops is imposed, I wonder.

This race will be determined by pit crews' efficiency.

They took more of the race off the circuit. Thanks Liberty!

This two stop idea could lead to dangerous releases in pitlane, collisions and injured crew, because the pressure will be on them much more than usual.

It's understood a number of technical directives were issued to the F1 teams last week.

Pertaining to skid design, design of wheel bodywork and tyre treatment.

"McLaren denies this (and) points mainly to the rise of Red Bull and thinks that the victory in Miami may have given a somewhat distorted picture. The FIA also assumes that McLaren did not have to make any adjustments."

It's definitely artificial which is not ideal. Then again, so is DRS. Monaco is particularly bad though since you can just back up the field and drive slow as Bas points out. At least this will throw a wrench into that.

My mandatory two stop race strategy if I am Yuki:

Start on worst compound (it doesn't matter).

Pit end of lap 1. Come out in clean air with your team's best race tire. Race in 100% clean air until you hit any slow traffic. Pit again!

Come out on hards. Run to end.

You *might* maximize your running time in clean air. Maybe a safety car messes you up, but you're Yuki and maybe you will mess up anyway...

Maybe not in Monaco, but one of the best races in recent yrs was when they put a lap limit on tires. Basically eliminated the need for tire management, and required everyone to race hard. Sort of like 3 sprint races strung together.

You can't be serious with that preposterous statement.

Do you wan tot say that into the eyes of the wives and children of the mechanics who could get hurt?

Drivers accept the risks but mechanics have not signed on for risk due to this situation.

Not sure how old you are but this is not a video game.

Why all this backlash over a forced 2 stop?

Previously the issue has always been, since refueling was banned, that teams could easily run at the slowest pace possible to force the guys directly behind into the group behind, ensuring victory for the leader. All he had to do is pit later than guys directly behind. They could drive 6 seconds of the pace and not be passed, driving so slowly crashing is virtually impossible.

Now with the two stop it seriously opens up the strategy. Guys at the front very likely need to push a lot more so to create a gap for themselves to fall in for both their stops. This leads to mistakes.

It's one of my favorite quotes, but I can't take credit. It was actually said to me by a former coach and a 2 time WKA champ. It was actually after he had a twelve month recovery from his worse accident racing late models. He was in his late 30s at the time.

If you take all the risk out of racing, then it diminishes the spectacle.

Despite your lecture, the reality is that friends and families that have fatalities very rarely walk away from racing.

Monaco is a joke. I just hope Max takes another pole, which means a race win to frustrate Liberty Media and MBS.
