The manual calls for Cerix Premium, which is a G48 spec which replaced Glycoshell. The dealer says to use Rotella G30 which is not compatible with G48 spec. G05 and G48 are interchangeable, but G30 is not.

Should I use a nitrite free (NF) fluid or one with nitrite. Some say nitrite helps protection, especially for wet cylinder engines. Is the 488 a wet cylinder lined engine? I understand coolant with nitrite helps with cavitation erosion which wet lined cylinders are prone to. I'm confused. Anyone with knowledge of the correct coolant?

I would also like an answer. I've been going crazy trying to get a straight answer!
At least we know that it should either be a G-48 or a G-30, so we are down to 2 choices. I think I came up with G-30 the last time I researched about 1/2 year ago, but not sure why.
I think it's because I heard that we need to use an OAT product. G-48 is a HOAT I believe.

I just found this post from a member here, and I think it may explain some of the confusion:

"glycoshell has always been a semi-universal coolant. it transitioned over from a NAP-free borated HOAT (commonly associated with G48) to a pure OAT because of the millions of VW group vehicles on european roads. naturally this also covers ford with havoline xlc (dexcool) and gm with g34.

agip ecopermanent, dexcool, paraflu UP and the entire basf g30 family are all functionally identical

anyways glycoshell never had nitrites at any stage. it was selected because it was what shell had to offer for antifreeze at the time. if you really need SCAs I would upgrade to Rotella ELC."

So If it changed from a HOAT to an OAT, that explains why we are confused. If that's correct, I'm thinking that the G-30 is correct at this point.
I really hope to get an answer soon because I am changing the coolant this fall.

I wonder if we can send the fluid to a lab, like Blackstone, etc. to analyze it and tell us if it's a G-30 or G-48. I would really like an accurate answer, because I know if we mix the wrong coolants together, it can cause major issues and gel up in the system.

Great update, up4speed. The original coolant was G05 which is not compatible with G30. Shell Rotella ECL is not rate to be either G05 or G30. However, it satisfies the requirement of B6210 OAT. Shell recommended using either Shell Zone or Shell Rotella. If you're not sure what's in your car you need to do a flush. The fluids are not compatible. I will be doing a complete flush and refill with Shell Rotella ECL NF.

Coolant flush is on my short list for my 2016 488 GTB after doing the spark plugs last month (posted my experience). -Anyone have any DIY or at least lessons learned to share?

The Workshop manual shows how to drain the coolant and refill the coolant. This is also on my To-Do list. How hard was it to replace your spark plugs and how many miles are on your car?

OEM is G30 - but look what is in there to make sure someone didn't change ..if you flush you can use g30 or g40

The original coolant is G05 or G48 which are not compatible with G30. However, dealers seem to be switching to G30.

The original fluid was Shell Glycoshell and it changed to Carix Premium, which is recommended in the Users Manual. Consequently, if your car has not been flushed out and refilled with G30 do not add G30.

I'm not sure what they use in Canada but definitely according to the user manuals they already moved to the g12 + in USA ..the 458 was the transition

Ferrari never used g05 in any of their cars from the 360 up

It's not what supplies of antifreeze recommend, it is what Ferrari recommends. Check the your user manual. From the Factory in Italy your car came with either Glycoshell or Carix Premium (both Shell products), a G05 or G48 category antifreeze. Both not compatible with G30.

Thanks I will review that section. 7200 miles, took some patience, search my post last month. Getting the coils out took the longest, overall about 8 hours but I went slow as first time on this model.

Did you change the coils too? Plugs and coils should last alot longer than 7,200 miles. Do your DCT and gearbox. Those fluids should be changed minimum every 6 years.

Those will be done this summer too. Didn’t change the coils, just did the plugs based on the recommended 8 year service interval. Great info above for selecting the right coolant, thanks all!

I did check the manual ..I believe you are incorrect due the name being some similar ...shell didn't make it clear

I will of debate this anymore.. every one can have their opinion ..mine is written in .annual and supported by other websites

The coolant that was OEM is a direct equivalent to g12 or g30

Again no Ferrari at least from 1999 has ever had g05 ..g48 was used in 360 and 430...the 488 used g12 which is g30 or better yet used g40

Look at the color in there ..maybe someone used the wrong coolant

You are relying on a website to tell you what is the equivalent..it is wrong

Remember the names are so similar for OEM g48 and g30 that it understandable how a mistake can be made

The page from the User Manual, Ferrari 488, I provided above clearly says, "Carix Premium" which is a class G48 coolant. Carix Premium replaced Glycoshell which is a G05 class coolant. Both are compatible. This is the coolant that Ferrari has used from the Factory in Italy. Do not mix any other coolants of a different class with these class coolants. To use a class G30 coolant you should do a complete coolant flush first.

The User Manual is the gospel from Ferrari--anything else is just that, something else.

I agree with what you said what the manual says but I disagree what the equivalent is I clearly showed it above that it's a g12 plus your website that you picked out I believe is incorrect or it just has the name wrong cuz they're very very similar

I realize the colors don't mean anything but in this case they do the 4:30 was filled with blue fluid the 488 was filled with red pink fluid showing you that there was a difference

Sorry, Shell Premium is not the same as Glycoshell or Carix Premium which are also made by Shell. You are referring to a Shell product that is not recommended in the User Manual.

The problem is that an OAT fluid and an HOAT fluid is not compatible with each other. It seems to me that the original is an OAT fluid, whereas the G 48 is a HOAT fluid which would make it incompatible. So it sounds like a G 30 should be more compatible if I’m reading it right. If Carix is G48, wouldn’t it be a HOAT? My research seems to point to the Carox being an OAT.

So basically you're saying that it's the same fluid as a 430 which is 100% wrong

    Sorry

Let's see who's had the 488 from the beginning and has done its own maintenance what color the fluid is when it came from the factory I guarantee you it was pink red which is g12+ not not g48 which is blue

Btw g05 was developed for Ford, Chrysler and MB in the early 2000s .iirc could off on date
..good coolant for some.older Ferraris like A 512 TR etc btw ...it is a good replacement for older Ferraris that used green coolant

you keep pointing to that website - it is misleading you - it is plain wrong
You are relying on that one site and just a "heading" to understand equivalent fluid - the website you are sighting has multiple errors ..approvals for VW point to a G30 fluid not g48 ... color says red in title and yellow in description, it says OAT when g48 is HOAT - it is actually describing a G30 mostly in body and says G48 in heading
Here is another site that has it correct
    https://www.kemetyl.nl/nl/shop/product/carix-premium-longlife-antivries-20l-3752020/
i have attached G48 specs from zerex and you can see approvals and descriptions of G48 ( HOATS)
The coolant specified in manual is as you say but that website says it is g48 just in the heading but the body describes G30
If you look at the PDS - the product you mention in manual and in the body of your website is VW -774 d/f approved - G48 is only 774-c approval
Please search a little more and you will see that the equivalent to the product you correctly stated in manual ( both for 458 and 488) is G30
    G48 was used in 360 and 430
You are more than welcome to use whatever you want but I am more concerned that you are misleading people based on a webpage - not even a PDS
Here are some attachments to help - please see the actual specs of the coolant and you will see how wrong the site you are pointing to is
Then look for what the product description /specs on other websites like the one I provided and you will see that the G30 actual matches ....it actually almost matches all of your website body as well
I hope you see how the website you keep pointing to is incorrect - it contradicts itself

Wow, the website I used may be wrong. Thanks for looking into this. I need to do more research on this. I never noticed the title says red and the body text says yellow--very confusing.

    I am so confused now!!!
I initially saw that the Carix Long life description sounded like an OAT in the body description and the title said G48. But as I look further, it seems like the body mentions OAT, but also mentioned silicates. An OAT with silicates is a HOAT. So now I'm leaning towards it being a G48 which is a HOAT which seems to be the like the Glycoshell (used in 360/430, and I think 458) and I read that the Carix is the replacement for and essentially the same thing as Glycoshell.
This is crazy! I was thinking....if the main difference with the 2 is the fact that the HOAT contains silicates, and the OAT does not, isn't there a way we can test our fluid for silicates to know the proper fluid?
