My wife is getting into tennis, and sees my passions (cars, music, F1....) and feels she may develop a passion for tennis. I kind of owe her a trip, so I figured I'd take her somewhere in North America to watch some pro tennis.
Any ideas for major tournaments in a great city? (I would obviously need to get tickets!)

Anyone go to see pro tennis?
    thoughts are appreciated!

I found these on the ATP site:

    7/19/2009 Indianapolis, IN, U.S.A.
    Indianapolis Tennis Championships
    ATP World Tour 250

    7/27/2009 Los Angeles, CA, USA
    Los Angeles
    ATP World Tour 250

8/10/2009 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Canada, Montréal, Canada
    Rogers Cup
    ATP World Tour Masters 1000
(I loved Montreal for F1 last year!!)

    thanks

If you're looking for a memorable trip in a great city...I'd advise against Indy.

I agree. I've been there once and it was an awesome experience. I had a chance to sit at center court during a Agassi match. The energy was incredible.

+1 my girlfriend played tennis all four years of college, and goes to the US open each year as a fan. It is a great time, and fairly affordable.

I would love to go there at some point.

The only pro tennis tournement that I have been to is the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in DC. I think it is in mid August every year. Last year had Juan Martin Del Potro, TOmmy Haas and Marat Safin. I think Roddick makes it most years. You won't see the best of the best, but it is a pretty good event, and you can see some good tennis on the main court, and the outter courts. It may also be a good option if you are looking for other things to do while on the vacation.

I'll be heading out to Indian Wells for the

    http://www.bnpparibasopen.org/1/home/

As you can see the tournament has all the top players male and female and is supposedly the worlds second largest venue (behind the U.S. Open).

I purchased my tickets and accommodations mid last year to insure an optimal experience. I will also have the opportunity to play on 3 different surfaces (at 2 different resorts) while I'm there. I try to make it a 9 day trip so I can relax and take advantage of tennis vacation. Plenty of instruction and group classes for your wife to take part in if she chooses to.

Ditto the US Open suggestion. Make sure you get tickets to a night session....preferably in the later rounds. In the earlier rounds you can get really close to the action on the outer courts and still get to see some of the bigger name players up close. It's a memorable experience not to mention it takes place in the greatest city on the Planet!

It certainly had good tension and emotion, but the quality of play was not very good, unfortunately. I guess there was a good deal of wind, but 70 unforced is pretty bad. Aryna was understandably upset with her performance today, especially coming off a great match against Iga.

Good job digging up this thread fossil, Rob. You seem to know your way around this place.

I also saw the Gauff / Sabalenka match - it was not bad, but the men's final, Alcaraz / Sinner, was truly epic. At 5h29mn it's been the longest ever final in the French tournament, and it was not short of drama, going to a tie-break in the fifth set after three match points had been saved in the third set.

Does Djokovic have anything left for the remaining Grand Slam events, or is he through with winning them?

“Local conditions” around NYC in general? Or just the train yards around the tennis center?

My view is NYC has come down somewhat from what it was at peak, but largely still fine.

I want to see NYC like it was 20-30-40 years ago, when you could take a Subway with NO worries,
where you can go out to a nightclub at 11pm with NO worries, where you can go out and grab a
bite from a street vendor at 2am with NO worries.

If it ever gets back to that I'll visit, but I'm guessing I'll be 90 by then...
