Over the past month or so, I have listened to over 100 hours of audio books re: Pacific War. Probably the high water mark for the Japanese Navy was Guadalcanal in the Solomons. The U.S. Navy had three times the KIAs compared to the ground troops. Ex-wife's farther was career Navy but never talked about his WW II experience until end of life. He was at Guadalcanal and said it was brutal but the Navy guys still felt sorry for the Marines. Here is an audio book for anyone interested in this history.

Between those and Russian subs they sure did litter the ocean floor.

Had a family friend in Bataan Death March. Couldn't have happened to more deserving people.

A very long time ago, I was sitting at a hospital nursing station, facing toward the hallway. An Orthopedic surgeon was writing notes, facing me. A group of visiting Japanese doctors came down the hall speaking Japanese. The ortho's face turned bloodless white and he started to shake and he got up a left. I later asked one of his colleagues what that was about. His parents had been missionaries in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded. As a small child he had seen both of his parents tortured and killed by the Japanese. Don't know the story of how he survived but I'm sure he would agree that the worst wasn't enough for a deserving people.
