430 TPS or TPMS ECU Failure

I have a "service" tire warning on my dash, notwithstanding that all tires are properly inflated. This pertains to my '07 F430 with assembly no. 71276.

So, how can I determine if the the error relates to a failed tire pressure sensor (TPS) or a failed Tire Pressure Management System ECU (TPMS ECU)?

First, have you manually checked the tire pressures and what are their ranges? Do they line up with what your readings are through the display?

Have you attempted to recalibrate the TPMS with the reset button?

If all of the above, do you have access to a code reader so you can check individual signals?

 

Manually gauged all tires at 35psig. The digital display does not show any readings other than the "Service" tire message. Pressing the Recalibrate button does nothing. I've got a Launch OADD-PO0705A diagnostic tool that I'll hook-up to see if it will identify the problem.

Let us know what the diag tool says. I have the same issue, all tpms transmitters in the wheels are transmitting but the RR is not registering with the TPMS ECU and my diag tool says it does not see the TPMS ECU at all.

 

I'll report my findings tomorrow.

So, I connected my LAUNCH diagnostic tool and did not detect any error codes specific to the TPS system.

I did, however, discover the following: DIGITEK Instrument Cluster Fault I 2. Digging deeper the tool says: No CAN Message received from TPMS ECU.

Since the car was not moving, I don't think messages would be generated by the TPMS ECU, but that's strictly a guess. Perhaps I should drive the car with the LAUNCH connected and to see if the message changes?

I'm now thinking about disconnecting the TPMS ECU, if I can find it, and to see if the tire service warning goes away.

Thoughts and or suggestions anyone?

I seem to have run a health check with my LAUNCH tool but didn't see any codes. I'll try again tomorrow and report my findings.

Notably, there appears to be some sort of onboard diagnostic program that runs when you turn on the ignition. I get an "OK" message followed soon after with a "Service" tire message.

I'm going to ask a dumb question... How old are your TPMS sensors? They do have a battery in them, which could be weak.

 

I think TPMS sensors have a shelf life of maybe 5-7 years, but could be longer. I would start with the drive of the car and see if it re-calibrates with the TPMS ECU. then start from there with the TPMS ECU unless you know your tire sensors are way beyond 7+ years.

 

I'm not sure how old my TPS' are as I purchased the car in September of last year. However, the date code on my tires (29 week of 2019) suggests that the sensors are nearly six (6) years old. I can't imagine all the batteries going dead at the the same time. And I thought if at least one sensor was working the dash display would show the pressure in that particular tire. My display shows nothing but the tire service warning.

But maybe if one sensor has a battery failure it triggers an across-the-board tire service warning?

Does anyone have know what shows up on the tire message screen if only one sensor becomes inoperable?

If any sensor fails it will disable the system and it will no longer be available.

An original TPMS sensor on my 612 gave out 3 months ago and they had a manuf date code of 9/2008 and it caused the same issue as you have.

So you need new TPMS sensors for all 4 tyres and probably some new tires as well given their age.

EPILOGUE

Thank you, Bill, for letting me know what happens if a single sensor fails.

I was curious to know what messages might be displayed on my Scan tool and on the dashboard message center if I removed the TPMS ECU. So, I removed the ECU and also removed the circuit board from the ECU to inspect it for any signs of failure/damage.

While the ECU was disconnected, I ran the scan tool and checked the dashboard message center, but nothing had changed. Also, there were no signs of damage to the ECU circuit board, so I reassembled the ECU and installed it back in its home behind the brake pedal.

I then turned the ignition switch to the "run" position and much to my surprise and delight, the "service" tire warning was no longer being displayed on the dashboard instrument message center.

WOW!

I then cycled through the TPMS and all four tires showed 35psig!

In conclusion, everything works for now, but I have no idea what I did to fix it other than disconnecting and reconnecting the TPMS ECU.

I'm beginning to think that I'm not cutout for Ferrari ownership as I've had way too many problems with this F430 in less than a year of ownership. Perhaps I should trade if for an air-cooled Porsche!

Effectively you did a ECU reset kind of like when you reboot your computer or your phone
On these cars that usually the first thing you do and to do it at a mass way is just to disconnect the battery and reconnect it using the quick disconnect in the frunk
The diag tool.probably said system not found /could not communicate in both scenarios
I would run again and see if it comes up on list of checked systems ..you should also use live data to see pressures etc

Notably I don't have a quick battery disconnect switch in the frunk; mine's an '07 F430.

Also, my Scan tool had this message relative to the TPMS when trying to connect yesterday and today before the system started working: If TPMS was once used with other devices, enter BlueTooth configuration option of the other devices system setup program and cancel the BlueTooth paring of this TPMS TSGUN. Otherwise the TPMS may not be found.

I'll try to connect the scan tool again tomorrow now that the TPMS is working and see if I can see "live" data.

You do, but it's not a traditional switch as the previous models. It's a hex bolt that works the same way.

 

Hmm, I've stripped all the carpeted panels from my frunk and didn't see anything that resembled a bolted switch.

Where is it located, and I'll look again.

It appears that sometime during MY '07 Ferrari deleted the battery cutoff switch from the frunk in the F430. Mine clearly has no such switch, conventional or bolt-switch.

I also removed the carpeted panels in search of a switch but came up with nothing.

Weird, I recall someone else had the same issue, don't recall if they were on a 2007 also. I know my 2009 model has a cut-off switch that requires a Torx screwdriver/bit to switch on/off. I think earlier cars had an actual handle, as seen in GogglesPisano's picture posted in this thread.

 

Odd, I have a 2008 and it's there. This must be some weird half year experiment thing. I wonder what else might be unique to yours. Also, your air pump bag looks different. Shiny sort of.

Either way, best to disconnect the negative at the battery to ensure everything is reset.

 

Notably, my air pump bag is not as shiny as it appears in the pic. I think the flash from my camera highlighted the sheen.
