Is a fuel additive / Injection cleaner recommended for the 328 ? If so what brand and how often. Thank You..
If you're filling your tank with Top Tier gasoline, it already contains additives that continually clean your fuel system. So, Techron and the like aren't required. But, if you're inclined to use them, it can't hurt. www.toptiergas.com
The fuel injection system in that car has 2 enemies. One is non use. Run it regularly. Water destroys some of the components. Use fuel from large, high volume, name brand stations.
You can buy gas without ethanol and that may remove your need for additive https://www.pure-gas.org/ Also some racing gas sales locale may have Sunoco 110 which is always first choise
110 octane in a low compression engine is pretty over the top. They run fine on regular, modern regular.
I use a small amount of this from time to time... https://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-System-Remover-Anti-Freeze/dp/B002G2VUJA The issue is alcohol in most fuels, which can attract water. The fuel tanks are aluminum. So keeping the fuel "dry" has its merits for tank longevity. This Redline product is non alcohol based, which is otherwise often the case in water remover products. Beyond that use the top tier fuels as noted, they have sufficient additives for keeping the system clean. If you must, use some Marvel Mystery Oil. The car does feel like its idles very so slightly smoother, but the placebo effect can be very strong.
As mentioned previously Deposit Control Additive (DCA) such as Techron is present in all fuels, required by EPA and CARB. Adding extra can be done but be aware that extra will get into the oil and impact performance of the oil. So if extra DCA is added into your tank, plan on changing your oil after you run through a tankful or two of gas.
I've never used a fuel additive in the 17 years I've owned my 328 OTHER than adding Stabil for winter storage. My Digiplex is set to the Euro timing map and I use "normal" pump gas - typically E10 - and use 89 (USA octane rating) or, if they don't have that, 91. I haven't seen any need for cleaning-type additives but, as others have said, if it makes you feel good to add it, do so!! FWIW, in the Marine world, one of the best fuel system cleaners I have ever used - though it's not marketed for that - is Marvel Mystery Oil. But be careful if you decide to use it. If there are a lot of deposits in the fuel tanks that are currently adhering to the sides/bottom, the MMO will scour them and clog fuel filters. I went through FIVE fuel filter changes on a marine 350 engine after putting MMO in the fuel tank! It was a lesson in the old "If it's working, leave it alone" philosophy. The engine was running great/no issues at all, the owner just decided it would be a good idea to clean the fuel system! It wasn't!
Marvel Mystery oil (1/2 oz per gallon) was recommended by my very experienced mechanic when I bought my car 10 years ago, been using it since then along with ethanol free 92 octane, fuel system performs perfectly and a compression check done at my recent major was excellent, my car has 50k miles.
