What is the name of the wrench I use on this nut?

So what kind of wrench do I use on this nut and how are they sized? I don’t want to use the wrong wrench or a pair of pliers on it, although at some point in the past it looks like someone did not use the correct wrench. Thx.

Ring nut socket

Use a 6-point socket wrench it grips better and won’t strip the nut. Match the socket size to the nut’s flats measure across with a ruler if unsure. Avoid pliers or adjustable wrenches they’ll damage it more. If it’s already chewed up, try a bolt extractor socket

 

Using a ring nut socket like Mitchell suggested would be best (if the ring nut isn't too mangled) -- they are sized by the OD of the nut. Another option for this application (where you are not having to reach down into a recess) would be a "hook wrench" -- they are also sized by the OD of the ring nut, and many have a hinge so fit a range of ring nuts and not just a single size. Their downside is they only engage one slot on the ring nut so can't apply as much torque as a ring nut socket (but might work/fit better on a badly mangled ring nut). Just do an internet search using "hook wrench" for some pictures.
