I have a replacement EL backlight on order, as my gauges have essentially no visible illumination during the day. At night they’re all illuminated, but weak. The dimmer is turned all the way up, and turning it all the way up and all the way down does produce the appropriate response.
So my issue is different than the typical “dead gauges with live needles”. Mine still illuminates, just very poorly. I’m hoping replacing the backlight will breathe new life (light) into them. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Are backlights either dead or alive? Or am I correct that they can fade slowly en route to their ultimate demise?

Usually the EL backlight panels do not fade before they fail.
The DC/AC inverter and its transformer can lead to light fading.

Ahhh. Well that’s disappointing. How involved are the replacements of the inverter and transformer?
I’ve seen them mentioned while researching EL panels, but I never retained any of that info.

Update to share on my panel. I received the Amazon replacement, and also ordered a few plug-in inverters to test them independently. I’m happy to report that the new panel was indeed much brighter compared to the original, even though my original wasn’t dead yet. I compared them side by side under many different conditions: 1 plugged into the car/1 plugged into the external inverter, then switch; 1 plugged into one external inverter; 1 plugged into a separate external inverter, then switch; both plugged into external converters connected to the same battery, then switch.
The outcome was always the same: new one was always brighter. What I found interesting was that when the panels were plugged into the car, they glowed green. Plugged into an external inverter, they glowed blue. This was true for both panels. Must be something in the rest of the system that controls how it glows?
I ended up installing the new panel, and it is considerably brighter than the original one -obviously at night- but even during the day, which was my original complaint. I also took the opportunity to paint the needles red.

Nice. Very detailed testing. Keep us updated on how long this one lasts for you.

Will do. I kept the original, but I’m cautiously optimistic this one will do the job. Fingers crossed. It seems like the aftermarket failures I’ve read about were either user error (not plugging in fully) or faulty inverters or transistors.
    I’ll be sure to update.

Backlight on my 360 cluster isn't fully gone yet, but pretty close. I'm about to go down this rabbit hole myself fairly soon. Adjusting brightness didn't do anything really. I saw the lighting flicker slightly (very dim) so i know the electronics appear to be still somewhat working to an extent. Hoping i'll be able to get away with just the EL replacement. Am I crazy to think so?

I’m no expert on the subject, but a panel replacement brought me from dim to bright. Worst case, put in a new panel and if there still more going on, at least you’ll already have a spare panel for when/if it goes out in the future. That was my plan, and so far it’s worked out.
