The story that was shared by Ferrari a few years ago explains their thinking for the Roma's grille as the design was inspired by a gladiator's helmet worn in the Colosseum. The body design language also echoed sensual curves of the era and la dolce vita. I fell in love with the Roma and it's wonderful you're getting the last run of the Spider. Mine came in last year and it's a joy to drive. Not sure of their interpretation for the Amalfi but we should give it time to digest.
Not a bad point you made there. When I first saw the back of the Roma in the distance a couple years ago I wasn't sure what it was and wasn't taken aback. Now, I'm a pervert for it's bum whenever I see one haha. Would love to give the Amalfi time and see if I change my mind on it.
It’s amazing how the right angle can shift your entire perspective. I remember just seeing a brief elevated shot of the car when everything clicked. Omg this is their 928. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
How do we reach the mods? We need a separate forum for Roma/Amalfi as these cars have zero in common with the California/Portofino. Just as there’s a separate thread for 12Cilindri vs the outgoing Berlinettas.
When my wife first saw the Roma in person, she referred to the rear as the jlo butt! I will say no more
Roma was a bold, new design, polarizing for some, lovely for others. Amalfi has taken the Roma design to the land of bland. Front and rear look like they could be the evolution of the GT into an EV, a kind of amorphic language.
Below, the Amalfi and the Roma side by side. What I didn't like about the Roma was greatly improved on the Amalfi, namely the rear end and the front grille. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Roma looks much sportier in the side view, more svelte. Crease in the Amalfi's door is not an improvement.
For me, Amalfi looks more complete and harmonious, a little more aggressive. More mature in some sense.
The Amalfi looks like an EV Camaro. The silly chevron sculpted side and many square meters of square shouldered front fender is bad. There is no elegance in this car, what so ever.
The photos above really illustrate how the Roma is more original and fondly memorable. I agree with the critique of the Amalfi as at first blush, it leaves you with an EV vibe. Maybe with time and seeing it in person, the muted design will evolve into something with historical character.
I definitely reserve final opinion until I see it in person. 2D pictures cannot convey proportion, scale, perspective.
At first glance the Amalfi is a Roma with the nose it should have had frpm the get go. On the other hand its boring. I will forever hate the colander grill or Cheshire Cat grin.
Mario, Thank you VERY much for posting these side by side photographs. Exactly what I was looking for. Currently a Porto driver, but who knows..........................
Having a chat with the head Ferrari designer at the reveal event gave a lot of insight. He said what they were aiming for was a moving sculpture; chiseled from a single block of monolithic stone.
Any chance we could cajole you to add the Portofino M to this comparison? Just for giggles to see the revolution and evolution? ;-)
The Roma was basically a hardtop rebody of the Portofino, which itself was an evolution of the Cali/Cali T. The Amalfi is a further evolution of the Roma. I know the people buying new want to separate from the poorboys in their fifth-hand Californias, but facts are facts . . .
In my view, the Roma was a new and original design. Certainly, the Cali evolved into the Portofino as did the Roma into the Amalfi but with less design elements.
The front grill on the Amalfi looks like it should be on an electric car . Roma grill weird but different. I like it . Rear on the Amalfi looks cleaner and a bit more “menacing” . The winner . Side view they are the same . Some nerd is going to call me wrong here .
Design maybe, but the engine? Porto M and Roma were essentially identical. Roma to Amalfi is really not enough to call it a new model; rather it's more of a mid-cycle refresh like Porsche does. Ferrari just goes the name-change-route to keep us constantly filled with FOMO. Alas, I am not. I loved the look of the Roma when it first came out but it's seems quite a departure from Ferrari design cues into the land of Aston design cues. As for the Amalfi, it's going to take me some time to decide on it. Photos never do justice.
Roma grill grater was never a good look. Afailmi fixes that element yet comes across bland and almost EV like. SMH at ascertain Aston is not better looking. The real issue is not exterior design but the lack of great sound these cars make. About as much fun as the 911 vacuums.
