Judging 60's Convertibles and Hardtops?

    When showing/presenting a 400SA at Cavallino this year, we received a 1 point deduction for not presenting it with its optional/seasonal hard top. Even though it left the factory built as a convertible. It has then been insisted that the car (and others with removable hard tops) should be shown with the hardtop installed and the convertible top down. This goes against decades of experience showing convertibles with their tops up. I strongly disagree with this mind set.

    For example, going to a concours, say Pebble Beach, with a 1 point deduction, you would already be knocked out of competition at that caliber of an event. What says everybody?

    Was your car delivered with hardtop? IF it was then what you are showing is less than the complete as originally delivered vehicle. No different than not having the complete manuals and tool roll.

    But the rule for F50s is they can be shown as a Berlinetta or Spider. Just another example of the 2 tiered rules for pre and post 75 cars and the IAC/PFA inconsistency. Stupid decision and was a rule obviously written for 246 and 308 GTS. The rule by the way says "Removable roof panel". And it was recently decided it really meant "tops". When in the history of removable roofs have they ever been referred to as "Panels"?
    Never is the correct answer. It was a term for the 246 GTS roof panel. Just another example of the out of control shoot from the hip decisions coming out of IAC/PFA. We need to just put an end to them.
    They are way past their use by date.

    P.S. Jeff, those cars also have convertible tops, another integral part. How do you display both? On an SA as I recall the top was an option. On the F50 it was not.

    Does anyone have any historical photos or information that indicates if cars were shipped/delivered with the hardtop installed or was it separate?


    Comparing the optional and seasonal hard top to manuals and tool rolls is missing the nuance of the question in my opinion.

    If it was ordered with the car I cannot imagine it was not shipped mounted to the car.

    But left the factory with a hardtop. I have read that 1945 SA lost its original hardtop supplied with the car to 1885 SA. What are the qualifications re 1945 SA in the Ferrari Classiche Red Book? If it came with a hardtop it deservedly should lose a point if it no longer has it or was not presented with it.

    I think all the 400 Superamerca Cabriolets were supplied with hardtops apart from possibly RHD 2311 SA with California style body?

    Edit: I think all the Pinin Farina 400 Superamerica Cabriolets were supplied with hardtops? Scaglietti RHD 400 Superamerica 2311 SA with 250 California style body possibly did not come with a hard top?

    Easy. Show the car with the hardtop, then remove hardtop and erect the folding soft top from under the deck lid. Or is that not the way on PF 400 SA Cabs? It seems the hardtop was not an option on the Pinin Farina 400 Superamerica Cabriolet, but standard as they all seem to have been fitted with one.

    From the internet: "The Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet, like other convertibles, would have a mechanism to retract and stow the soft top. A "deck lid" or cover would then be used to conceal the folded top when it's not in use, providing a smooth, finished look to the rear of the car."

    They've got the judging wrong for the F50 imo. If a car is going to be judged, it should be done so in the car's complete entirety as built and supplied new. If it is missing pieces from as built and supplied new when being judged it should be penalised.

    Actually, if a car such as a PF 400 SA Cab is missing the roof it was supplied with, it should be penalised much more than one point.

    So for the F50 , would that be with the hard top on and the soft top shown as an accessory?

    The F50 does come with many accessories but if it's going to judged, whether its complete or not should certainly be a major factor. Those F50 accessories are however more difficult to transport of course and separate from the car than the hardtop that can just be fitted to the car on a PF 400 Superamerica, as intended, removed and the folded and stowed under the deck lid soft top erected.

    Judges are allowed 15 minutes per car and are not allowed to handle the car. So that means the owner needs to bring several helpers and in a crowd of onlookers remove the top and find a place for it on the field so the convertible can be displayed. And judge the rest of the car in that 15 minute time frame. Good luck with that.
    Thats not taking into consideration the long standing rule (30+ years) that manually operated tops will be shown in the raised position and not lowered.

    Have you ever changed tops on an F50? There are considerable number of parts to change from one to the other. In no case unless you are present at the changing will you see all of them. So in either case, coupe or spider configuration you will miss many. So you are merely suggesting to trade one set of parts for the other.
