Ferrari F80

I didn’t waste time watching. If I could get an allocation, I would order the F80. I don’t think it is the most beautiful car. But then I also thought the F40 was not beautiful. The LaFerrari was beautiful. The 288 GTO was beautiful. To my eyes. I even thought the Testarossa was somewhat unfortunate looking from a beauty standpoint. But I would have had a Testarossa back then if I could have. Got to drive one once and it was spectacular (at the time). Rode in the F40, didn’t drive. It was sensational but I didn’t want to own it.

People say all kinds of crap - usually about things they could not accomplish or things they cannot afford. Social media just amplifies it. So, just don’t take the bait and respond. It takes a special kind of person to log in, read, and spend the time negative commenting. That kind of special is not something to which I aspire.

But back to the real topic. I think the F80 is spectacular. Yes, I would love to have a v12 that redlines about 11k. But that would probably be in addition to, not instead of the F80. I just hope the SF90 replacement is spectacular. It will probably be the last mid engine I get (If I can swing the allocation).

 

if you like so much F80 why you don't buy this car from second hand. one is available for 5,5 million USD. maybe you are afraid of value lost? if this car is so amazing, value should go only up, right? so it's safe investment

I genuinely can’t wait for the day when every individual online is as identifiable, and held accountable, as they are in real life. The amount of sheer stupidity people feel comfortable spewing from behind a screen is becoming overwhelming. It’s honestly exhausting.

I mean, I can’t even fathom going online to complain about things I don’t like, would never buy, probably can’t afford or even if I could, would never get the option/offer to buy one, just to tell people who did spend the money how rubbish their car is and how Ferrari failed.

Like, really? It should’ve had this motor or that, or be tuned by unicorns. Meanwhile, the guy making these critiques looks like he cuts trees for a living, and probably he’s never seen the car in real life, let alone driven it. And people are agreeing with him?

Instead of giving the benefit of the doubt to the professionals test drivers, engineers, designers, people who actually worked on the car, you’re siding with some plaid shirted YouTube philosopher with a beard full of sandwich crumbs looking for clicks? If that’s your approach to processing information, I’m sorry to say, but your IQ is flirting dangerously with the room temperature. And no, this isn’t even about liking or disliking Ferrari it’s just about basic reasoning.

Honestly, what a colossal waste of time and energy. I enjoy these forums for picking up bits of info and the occasional laugh, but maybe it's time to take a step back. My brain cells are starting to file complaints.

I know it will take the best part of two years to get this car and I wouldn't like anything more than reading news and hearing from other owners and enthusiasts in this thread who have fresh news, first hand experiences, sharing sopecs and positive things to say but all this negativity in the thread from people with "no skin in the game" is tainting the experience.

While I understand your point of view and agree to some extent (like being anonymous), I think it is also highly flawed and discriminatory.

If only those who can afford Ferrari's or worked in them were able to share their opinion, this forum would be boring and deserted. Even more if only you were allowed to make positive comments. Sounds more authoritarian than anything.

Imagine a world where this would apply to everything. Journalism would be mostly dead.

The F80 is probably the most controversial Ferrari since the Dino, the powertrain and design are a huge let down for many enthusiasts (those who are able to buy one and those who aren't alike), so of course there's gonna be a lot of opposing opinions about it.

If you would like to only read positive things, then most of the internet and public forums like fchat are most definitely not for you. Even real life doesn't work like that. In this case, having an F80 owner's, engineers, and possible buyers no complaints club would be the solution. Maybe taking a step back from fchat is a good idea.

 

Aesthetics aside, which is always a highly personal thing, the F80 is undoubtedly excellent in every way, IMO except on aural emotion when heard from the outside. Since there's no beauty without a flaw, this appears to be the F80's only Achilles' heel. But is an engine sound deemed too quiet and too subdued in Ferrari's halo car inevitable? Because I don't think so, I've been following the case of Maserati, whose twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter Nettuno was also heavily criticized for its lack of aural emotion. As I mentioned in my previous post, the new Maserati-developed Tubistyle exhaust system substantially improved the sound of the GT2 Stradale's V6, as can be heard in the video below taken at Goodwood.

What would happen if the F80 was equipped with an exhaust system identical to that of the GT2 Stradale? I think it would be reborn in terms of aural emotion and it would be a different car, and logically, its sound would have to be superior to that of the Maserati. Although the specific sound of a turbocharged V6 engine isn't directly determined by horsepower (cv) alone, the fact that the GT2 Stradale engine has 640cv and the F80 engine 900cv, the 260 cv difference on the F80 make its sound more throaty due to increased airflow and higher exhaust gas velocities, especially when paired with a well-designed exhaust system.

Without even presuming to offer advice to F80 owners, the path seems clear to me for anyone who can't live with the sound Ferrari currently offers on the F80. They will find alternative exhaust systems on the market that will produce a much better sound, and the simplest way to comply with legal requirements is by installing exhaust valves which can be open and close on demand.

Ok so everyone gets a participation trophy, God forbid one is discriminatory and not inclusive, I get it.

When you have a medical condition do you want to hear from a medical specialist or from your mechanic? Do you want to hear facts, educate opinions or fluff ?

Personally when I seek facts I only want to hear from experts, from those with first hand information and experiences and from those whom are invested in the subject one way or the other, yes everyone can express their opinions but I wouldn’t personally care for it unless I look for light entertainment.

In relation to negativity, personally I can not stand negative people and negativity in general but setting that aside, I strongly believe only when one matures they realise that solid opinion and final conclusion is only established after all the facts are being properly absorbed and all the learning has been done, in this situation for that to take place IMO it must involve driving the car otherwise all one could say is that they dont like it aesthetically, or the way it sounds, or the price etc etc. and once that was said its time to step aside until you have new experiences because until such time your ability to bring something tangible or new to the table has been exhausted, I am not trying to shut you down I am only pointing out that you’ve been heard and your “new” opinion is no longer relevant because is the same yesteryear regurgitated one and it’s making me tired.

I’ve observed quite a few members, across multiple threads, expressing the same opinion over and over again, it gets tiring and honestly as I said before I fail to understand what the goal is other than to discredit and annoy those who are invested in the car.

I see where you are coming from, you think I am some sort of an elitist and you, in interest of fairness and equality must be the unsung hero and the voice for those who have been ostracised because of their position or status, I am sorry but that’s not the case, I am very inclusive I just don’t care to hear from you if you are boring, constantly negative, aren’t informed, educated on the subject, I will pay attention if you are funny because I like comedy, it’s an “escape” for me, I came from zero and I am the furthest from an elitist you could find.

If, you in interest of fairness and equality enjoy listening to repetitive subjective uninformed biased opinion with no actual basis in reality just based on “feelings” from individuals who are not educated or invested in the subject on a forum where one comes for objective information, first hand encounters and experiences please be my guest, I don’t, and since you are being very kind and inclusive you have to extend the same courtesy to myself and allow me to speak from the heart without judging me.

Interesting derailment!

F80 is controversial - we all can agree to that. I cannot speak for Fortis and others, but what makes the discussions turn stupid are stupid statements like, “if you think it is awesome you have to put the $5.5M down to buy it and since you haven’t done that it is because in your heart you don’t think it is awesome because the car will not appreciate in value.” (Paraphrased). Or the assertion that nobody likes the car but are too afraid to admit it. Normally I ignore such childishness, but when directed at me, I chose to reply.

Of course everyone has thoughts and opinions, and they make the threads interesting. I mostly like to hear from people who have or currently own the cars in question - or at least have driven them. But I have learned a lot about design etc. from non owners as well. Most of the discussions are interesting even though often repetitive.

There will always be the occasional dive bombers who are more adolescent in maturity. Best ignored, because generally they are unable to have actual respectful discourse - just as a certain poster has demonstrated.

Im pretty happy with my current collection but if I was able, I would add the F80 because it seems to be a fantastic machine! It would be wasted on me, according to many, because it far exceeds my skill or usage.

We buy and drive our cars for the delight that it brings us. Not to be seen or make statements or as investments.

 

As someone whose life is fueled by an obsession with everything Ferrari, I truly appreciate how many others here feel the same. That said, I’m exhausted by the endless loop of discussions—F80 styling, exhaust note, V12 this, V12 that. Like Fortis, I’m worn out.

Yet at the same time, I can’t help but respect the counterpoint. Where else do you find such intense passion for a brand and its heritage? That kind of emotional investment—people voicing their dreams of what Ferrari should be—is a testament to the marque’s enduring power. Honestly, that enthusiasm gives me hope for the future of Ferrari.

My suggestion: please, if you haven’t yet, see the car in person. Sit in it. If the opportunity arises, drive it. The styling is dramatically better in real life than in photos—seriously, it’s not even close.

I still remember when the Enzo launched. Many of us didn’t get the styling at first. Now it’s iconic. Give the F80 time. As for the engine debate, let’s agree to disagree—or we’ll just keep going in circles, which, again, is exhausting.

I'm not here to find professional help, not much comparable to medical professional insight.

Then an internet forum is not the place for it, you want to hear from experts, then be ready to pay for it, rather for their time or their opinion in a magazine or similar. This is a public enthusiast's space, not a Ferrari Owner's club or Ferrari Dealer.

Semantics, the opinion from someone like Marcel (who many times can be negative) could be worth more than that from one of a billionaire who has driven and owned the most expensive and exclusive Ferraris.

You're contradicting yourself, you cannot be inclusive if you think that some people's opinions are not worth it because of their status.

I just like to hear different opinions, I cannot and will not tell a Star Wars (example) fan their opinion is worthless because he or she is not an actor, director, or Hollywood producer. I also don't "listen to all the noise", everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that doesn't mean you have to interact with all of it. There's a lot of toxic content, that's the internet, people need to learn how to navigate it.

 

Well, from my own straw poll of one, it’s not true for me. I thought long and hard about spending £3.1m, like most people would do. I’m not sure I know the people who are prepared to spend that kind of money on a car they don’t really like so they can be seen to be ‘loyal’. A baseball cap, maybe.

 

So if someone deny F80 allocation Ferrari will not remove that customer from "vip list"?

No idea, I didn’t refuse it. I was really glad of the allocation. If you don’t want to buy this or future Ferrari hyper cars (and I don’t think they will ever go back to V12s) what does it matter to you? You’ll still be able to get a 296 Speciale or something else you might like.

What I can say for certain is that if I really didn’t like the car I would have no problem in refusing it. I mean, c’mon, do you know how difficult £3.1m is to come by? Don’t take the F80 and join the XX programme or the challenge series. Your standing won’t go down if that’s what drives you completely. In fact it will probably go up.

 

@Fortis I hear your pain! I do have a solution for you though. My conclusions came from a time when I too felt like you about fchat and was wondering why I spent time here when I really do have so many other things to think about.

It is true, everyone is entitled to their opinion. What they are not entitled to though, is for you to care about it. You have to give permission for that. You can adapt your mindset to simply filter out being bothered by people you deem to be writing to a pre-judged narrative. You have to conclude they cannot be persuaded because they actually can’t. They are not looking for reasoned and articulate argument. Instead they have fully and finally exercised their right to their own opinion.

And for when you still find some particularly bothersome just use the ignore feature. I have quite a few on ignore who I probably irritate as much as they do me - and that’s great. I’m sure I irritate many and I can certainly understand and live with that! So, it’ll do both sides a favour - you don’t see the post and they don’t get to see what would have been your reaction to it! And you also get to avoid the irritation that would have caused you to write a post from such a reaction. Fchat is a much more bearable place with that feature.

What’s even more amusing is the thought of many people having a completely different conversation to everyone else in the same thread. We all think we’re reading the same things but really we’re not. Brilliant.

 

Anyone on the list for this car has such standing, buying Ferrari's for most likely over 20+ years, their profile is filled with a minimum of 9 cars, a lot are in the race program, or like me restoring and showing vintage Ferrari's, that I do not think it would hurt their standing IMHO.

Additionally out of all the people I know with allocation for the F80, they are more than thrilled with the car. Its kind of ridiculous to think Ferrari is forcing people to buy this car, we are all honored to be allocated a spot.

Also just to refute the notion there are unallocated slots because customers do not want the car is also an internet falsehood. I was at my dealer yesterday taking delivery. There was a top VIP customer there I know who has a 288 GTO and an F50 and he is still on the waiting list as a hopeful, but no open spots.
