He's not average. He shares GOAT status. The issue is he is well past his prime. Watching hammy is painful just like watching the Doctor at the end of his career in moto GP. Hammy should have retired when his stock was the highest. Look at Rossberg. He only got 1 WDC but we think of him as the only guy to beat hammy in same equipment. Look at Vettle with stunning 4WDC in a row. He held on too long too and we remember his failure at Ferrari.

Lewis' prime ended in 2015. From there he likely got complacent in being in cars that were so dominant he didn't have much of a challenge to stay at his peak or even improve. Yet he won 4 more championships. GOAT status, I dont think so. If you need the best car to win, then you're nothing special.

Amateur mistake after amateur mistake... I'd be more forgiving if it was a rookie straight from Prema in F2, but it's only right to expect more - way more - from Lewis Hamilton who's getting paid enough a year to buy the entire F2 grid. It's a waste of time for him to have a seat. His prime and even the initial stage after his prime is gone and it's not coming back.

There is no excuse. It's not like it was an early thrown yellow as the marshalls were about to jump on track and he didn't have time to react. It was the freakin formation lap and there was 200 people on the track. Heads right towards them at 150 mph before slamming on the brakes into the pits. Honestly 5 place grid penalty is a slap on the wrist.

For those that don't have access to Instagram. Here's the video of Hamilton in the double waved yellow on the formation lap.

I'm genuinely astounded he got off this lightly. Zandvoort pitlane is mostly blind as well. There would be no way for him to stop in time had someone crossed.

    Height of stupidity.

He's nowhere close to a GOAT driver. He was car carried his entire F1 career and now he's being fully exposed. Rosberg beat him, for God's sake. The GOAT simply does not lose to Nico Rosberg over a season.

Completely agree that he is nowhere to GOAT status, but there is no need to insinuate that Nico Rosberg is a bad driver/lesser driver than LH44. Image Unavailable, Please Login :)

That's kind of the point. :) Nico is as good as Lewis, and neither belongs in a conversation with the greats.

Exactly. He had a rocket car. He assumed he would win so he never had to fight. So he was soft and complacent. Now he's in an average car and has no clue how to fight. So he makes rookie mistakes, and that will continue until he retires.

Disagree. Rossberg was smart to win by luck of hammy dnf’s. He knew he was one and done. Hammy was within a few points of maybe 9 WDCs. One point difference and Kimi was the 2007 wdc.

    The GOAT has no clothes……

I keep making the point that number of championships alone is not the measure of greatness. But we’re in an age where statistics are used to justify any kind of absurd argument.

Don’t get me started on “podiums.”

Hamilton can barely get out of his own way. His car was a full second faster than the field for most of his career, and he was ****** to his team more often than not. Unimpressed. Didn't he go off pit entry in China or something to cost himself another WDC? Rosberg beat his ass fair and square, despite being the designated #2 driver.

So let me put this out there:

2016 right? When Rosberg beat Hamilton?

The only DNF between the two was Hamilton at Malaysia.

In the end the point spread was:

    Rosberg 385pts
    Hamilton 380pts

IF it wasn't for Hamiltons DNF, Hamilton would have won 2016. So yeah, Rosberg was lucky to win the WDC title.

People can say Hamilton won 7 championships, and that would be correct, but a great driver is not just based on wins. It's about how they overcome adversity and how they won. They can drive a far inferior car to 2nd and that is better than winning in a rocket of a car. I think Moss would be in the top 10 or so best drivers ever, but he has 0 championships.

But that DNF changed everything. It allowed Rosberg the margin to simply finish behind Lewis every race without risking his championship. The Merc's had a HUGE margin over the rest of the field so Rosberg could quite literally just cruise. Turn engine down, finish P2, get championship.

People forget that Rosberg started that season with 4 wins on the trot. He gave Lewis the position when he had car problems in Monaco so the team could win the race even though it would be the easiest thing ever to keep Lewis behind him.

Not a great - so the car drove itself lol. Was within title vs FA lol. FA. Max faces who?? Please keep debating and I also think LH should have retired over the summer this year.
I guess one needs to be what to be a “great”??
    Continue the “enlightenment” LOL!!

Lewis may be great, or may have been great. But the greatest or even among those that are in the conversation, I don't think so. It's a very simple outlook too. When he had a dominant car he won, when he didn't, he didn't. At least not much. I can't think of a single race (even though I assume it exists) where Lewis was the reason a car that had no business even fighting for a win, won the race.
