348 1989 Styling Analysis for 348

Funny to read: "Dark sill treatment reduces aesthetic mass", when you realise that part of Ferrari's 348 "facelift" was to make the lower sections of the bodywork body coloured, instead of black.

That was a clever, money and time saving "refresh" for Ferrari, because on the early cars, the lower panels were painted red, and then black paint was added on top of the red paint - To do the "facelift", they simply didn't bother doing the black paint part of the process!

(The previous 328 GTB's and GTS' also had black lower sections that started off red and then got painted black on top)

 

I like the black. I've sometimes thought that if I got a later car, I'd paint the lowers black like the original Pininfarina design.

The black lowers have always been a very odd choice to me as it wasn’t keeping with the trend of the time. Exotic cars of the 80s and 90s, including tuner cars and Americm-built European wannabes, all tended toward a low, monochromatic, look. The black lower half of the 348 body eschews both aspects of this trend.
