Alpine A110's are really great, but I would miss a special engine. It has a simple 4-cil engine. Which also has its pro's of course. Porsche 997.1 GT3 is high on my list to replace my GTB QV. Still analog, with hydraulic steering, manual and the Mezger engine. Other option: Aston Martin V12 Vantage (manual). The smallest AM, with the biggest engine.
F40 I would love to just ride in one. Lancia Stratos, very timeless design. Pantera, maybe I know this one doesn't count but a 308 GT4 with the Dino badges as it should be. Although I may sale my Exige and get one. I am kind of attached to the Exige.
I had a 308 and 328 for about 25 years. I sold the 328 on trade for a 599. Happy that I did so. While I loved the 328 ( less so the 308 - I had a challenging one) the 599 is much more usable in a big city. I was getting to the point of not driving the 328 because it was just such a pain to use. getting stuck in bumper to bumper traffic is not fun, and the roads in Atlanta are challenging on a good day. I got to have the FCA 50th anniversary 599 for about a month, and really loved how usable it was... and astonishingly fast.... its not as good looking at the 308/328 series, but it makes up for that in usability, good AC and my wife likes it much more..... I would like an F8 - but the prices just are outrageous... Roma is a possibility...maybe an 812 someday, but fundamentally the 599 is about as fast as all the others, and just as comfortable... with out all the modern electronics.
I honestly don't see "replacing" my 328. Yah, I could do a 360 spider 6-speed. But I like the the 328's looks better. But there are two things that the 328 lacks so I decided on a supplement to it. There are 2 things that I feel could have been better. One is, its not a true convertible. Yes the roof comes off and I like that, but its not the open air feeling I like that you get from a 360 or 430 or 458 spider. The other is the engine. Its a fine engine. But IMO, it lacks a bit of personality. The Dino before it has all kinds of drama and personality. The 458 at 9 grand is amazing. But the 328 doesn't really have the sound, fury, or zing of the others before it or after it. And it turned out to be this. 5 speed, twin cam Dino engine, true convertible -- and very old school simplicity. No computers, no electronic gauges, no luxury features. Just a small car with a lot of character and seat of the pants driving. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you consider the question of "replace" as meaning you want a car that fills the same niche as the 308 rather than just going a completely different direction and switching to a cushy continental cruiser then I would probably choose an Alfa 4C and a valid reason for doing so would be if my left knee went out.
I had a 4C. Fun. Certainly fast enough for city driving. Difficult car to live with. And I couldn't stand Alfa dealers. The gearbox let it down. What a pity they never made a manual.
IF, I ever contemplated another American car, I think a '69 Z/28 would be it. " Attached" as in you got in it and couldn't get back out? I love the Exige! Before I bought my S1 Europa track car, Exige was on my list...and truthfully; I probably should have bought an Exige instead of the Europa and my '79 GTB. Oh well; live and learn....or not. I feel you.....I love the Dino Spider with its front fascia lifted directly from the Dino 206 Berlinetta Speciale Prototipo (just without the perspex cover over the headlights). Gorgeous. And not that a QV is a paragon of modern technology, but I ditched mine for a '79 Euro GTB for precisely the same reasons you picked-up the Dino: trying to get to the most pure experience possible, with as little signal interruption between driver and road as possible (just without the open air aspect obviously). - Dave
I'll play this game with an added rule: The alternative has to be of similar or lesser value (that is, no super/ultra cars, multi-million dollar classics, etc.). Given that, my choice would be a 1972 Porsche 911. The only complaint I have about my 308 is the attention it gets - I don't like being stared at, video'd, people posing with it, etc. A long nose 911 would scratch the classic carb'd Euro itch, but with far less attention. Sure, you'd get some people who would know what it was, but when most people see a long nose 911, they think it's just an old Porsche. I may end up making this switch if I ever come across a well-sorted, well-designed hot-rodded '72 911 (there was one on BaT last year that I would definitely consider). Honorable mentions: Porsche 928 and BMW E30 M3, though the 928 would almost certainly attract the same sort of attention the 308 does (that's certainly true of my 944).
No interest in anything else. If the 328 was gone I wouldn't "replace" it with anything but would happily accept my '68 340S Medium Blue Metallic Barracuda Fastback if it somehow showed up in town! It was my daily driver/weekend drag strip car for many years and is the only car I've ever owned that I (occasionally) miss. And, unlike my 20 years newer 328, the air-conditioner actually cooled the interior!!!
I’ve only had mine a couple of years but I bought it because I’d promised myself one back in 1985…. But there were more important things to spend the money on before. It’s from the era where Ferraris were beautiful-now they are “impressive “ aka all angles and in yer face. I love the analogue experience but it does have drawbacks- it is pretty noisy! But if I want easy peaceful (ish) driving I have a 440BMW (M4 but with manners). I can’t see a new Ferrari as practical for everyday use. So I wouldn’t swap it but will keep it till it’s too difficult to get out of!! There are however a number of cars I’d like just for a week if I was very rich!
Hard to answer, because there's nothing else that could replace the specific kind of driving I can do in the 328 for the same money. However, if I had no choice but to sell it and get something else with the proceeds I would go for a Lancia Delta HF Integrale, BMW E21 Alpina, BMW E12 M535i, BMW 1988 M5/M6, or a combo Alfa GTV and a BMW E30 Convertible.
I've never driven one, but I think the only car that would be in the same realm, for me, would be the Dino.
… I must be getting old. I am starting to want a comfortable low maintenance cruiser. I already have two old rear mid engine cars. Maybe the C9 Corvette will look nice. Driving a 458 up from Monterey during Car Week spoiled me.
Didn't realize GM was interested in acquiring Pininfarina (insert rim shot). Actually, the recent Vision CX(?) concept for a future Vette was not horrible - as far as fantasy cars go - but I think it would be challenging to revise the one-piece canopy (ala Testudo, Modulo, 512S Speciale, and Birdcage 75) to road-legal (road-realistic?) status without disrupting the design. One thing's for sure: it would be be difficult to make Corvette more awkward looking than it currently is. - Dave
