I need a source for reasonably priced metric fuel hose. This is for a 308, so I assume I need 7mm ID, and also possibly 6mm ID.

It seems like everyone I go to locally has only non-metric sizes. I've heard that these can leak over the long term.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Just a thought, have you tried a Porsche or Mercedes Dealer. I buy a few screws and bolts from my Porsche Dealer. Don't try to describe what you need, take the part and ask them to match it.

Go to any VW dealer with a sample of your hose. The stuff they sell is a perfect match to the OEM Ferrari stuff.

I generally ask Randy at Continental (630-655-3535) for it. He stocks it in bulk and then just cuts what I need. Yes, it is important to get the metric stuff as has been noted as the imperial sized hose will leak over time. Also the hose, made by Wurth (hence the VW/Porsche applications) is oil and fuel rated so it lasts a long time. If you are doing all the hoses, don't forget the short lengths that connect to the cross over pipe between the tanks. Silicon is a substitute here if you don't want the Ferrari stuff which is about $10/inch (each piece is 4 inches). A P.O had put on what looks like heater hose on mine and the result is predictable (perished) after 10 years or so. Another winter job this year. Doesn't it just "delight" you to find someone else has taken a short cut rather than done the job properly.
    Good luck

Silicone is actually not recommended for fuel supply. Fluorosilicone-lined hoses can barely get away with fuel transfer, let alone fuel supply. Stick with nitrile-lined hoses only.

Dom, 5/16" is perfectly suitable to replace the lines in your car (except the return to the tanks at the last carb. 3/16'' will work there).

These sizes are actually a bit smaller than the metric equivalent (5/16" is only 1/10th of a mm smaller than 8mm).

TRutlands stocks the hose but if you do a search for metric braided hose you will find the actual manufacturer in England--I do not recall teh name but the price was awesome---but you have to buy 100 feet i think.

I actually got a 3 foot section of this hose replacement for free at a local industrial hose supplier. It is very tough hose, RED, and imperious to petro chemicals. They sell it by a thousand feet spool, so they "sample" me a section for free when I told them I only needed 10 inches of this stuff.

I have been fairly lucky with these industrial suppliers for other stuff too (like Orings). I even offered to pay but they refused saying "writing it up is more trouble than it's worth, just take it"

Do a search on internet for local hose suppliers in your area. Can't hurt.

I agree with Peter, as I've got all non-metric hoses and they seem to fit perfectly. I can't see how they would leak. Have you tried using hose clamps? <jk>

I've heard that using non-metric can lead to leaks, but usually in reference to fuel injected cars (i.e., higher pressure). Perhaps it would work fine in carburated situations, but if I can find some metric hose, I'd prefer to stick to metric.

I found what looks like another source: Pelican auto parts carries metric hose at ~$2.80/foot.

The nice thing about non-metric hose is the price.

I'll try to hit up a VW dealer tonight on my way home from work. If they don't carry it, I'll consider non-metric vs. mail ordering metric hose. I won't be able to work on the car until the weekend anyway.

Peter/Yelcab/Dom, I hear you loud and clear. I am currently using the red colored industrial supply fuel hose that is virtually bullet proof. The thickness of it alone gives me piece of mind and I am not worried at all about leakage. Did my entire GT4 with this stuff including the cannister above the pass. side fuel tank and the evap connecting hoses between the 2 tanks. What a major PITA to do the entire car but won't have to mess with this crap again for at least another 10 years. The OEM VW cloth braided stuff will only last 3 years tops in CA due to MTBE additive in gas. The black OEM cloth braiding hides rubber breakdown and gives one a false sense of security and gives no warning upon leakage.

    All,

Im getting all my fuel hose from Dave H. but he does not have the 16mm and 12mm coolant hose. I am looking for something that will last and handle the temps. I have not had much luck yet. Newco has only 15mm. And the Aeroquip 2556 hose says it withstands only 150 degrees F. I have been told this is what many Ferrari parts places have been selling for years as heater hose.
    Any suggestion will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Rob

    Holy Old Thread Resurrection Rob!!

I honestly don't remember where I wound up getting my fuel hose back then. I think it may have been from the VW dealer, but I'm not sure.

I've used BMW-branded fuel hoses for over a decade and never had a problem. They are readily available (over the counter at BMW dealers), come in the correct metric sizes, and are over-rated for carb 308 applications since they are used under high fuel injection pressure in the BMWs.

    Dave,

Im sorry yes the lengths that I need are longer than what Dave is making. I spent an hour on the phone with Gates and all night looking at websites and will look around this weekend for what is available in those lengths. I was pretty surprised to find the guys at Gates and Aeroquip have no idea about there own products!

BTW Dave is working with material specialist and his tests have shown that the available hose is not designed for the new fuels coming. I cant afford to be caught with my pants down. I just took off some BMW hose and it seems to have fuel sweating out of it.

If it is that bad, why are all of these major companies still selling incompatible hose? Its not like Goodyear, Gates, Dayco, etc are totally in the dark about what is being introduced to the market, so why would they produce hose that would not withstand the fuel that's currently being sold?

I can't imagine there must be too much difference between the fuel sold here in Canada and what you folks are buying in the U.S. but I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my car. I use pretty much exclusively Shell V-Power (91 octane, no ethanol), but have on a number of occasions filled up with 10% ethanol blends and no problems. My small lines (between the pump, carbs, and vapour venting) is all Gates, spec SAE J30 R7. My filler neck and cross-over pipe hoses are SAE J1527 A2 spec (by Newline, a company here in Canada, but it appears to be rebranded Goodyear).

In my line of work, I deal with this everyday (tanker truck repair and fabrication). These tanker trucks and trailers have to undergo annual inspections which includes hose delivery assemblies (mostly Goodyear "Flexwing") and I haven't been seeing this happening. We do have ethanol blends and alot of biodiesel here and again, no gross degradation (keep in mind, fuel trailers normally carry over 10,000 gal and this is all dropped through those hoses, day-in, day-out. Inspections are done on a yearly basis. That's alot of exposure).

I think the MTBE has been gone for several years now due to potential ground water contamination. That's one reason why we got more alchohol in the gas.
