I have been researching gear oil for almost a month and almost concluded ..not done yet..so far after exhaustive research I came to is to buy ein /agip rotra lsx gear oil from eBay (Italy) or a local vendor but have to buy 12 quarts ...the next and last thing I am looking at is the motul 300ls

When I was doing my research I was looking for gl5 oil which is yellow metal safe and/ or had a gl-4 rating as well..and to top it off ...good for Limited slip

I run Redline NS, just changed it out again last week, cleaned the filter and adjusted the cables, shifts excellent, my synchros and diff like it, and its GL5.

That is GL4. Ferrari for better or worse calls for GL5.

There really isn't a brass safe GL5. It becomes a matter of degree. Ferraris modern transaxles call for GL5 because of the differential but GL5 additive packages are contrary to the needs of synchronizer operation and to varying degrees are harmful to brass.

Some feel GL4 is a better choice but it does not meet the GL5 spec Ferrari calls for.

I use Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic Gear Oil with Anti-Slip in 75W-90. No issues with chattering limited slip.

Just about any full synthetic 75W-90 transmission/gear oil will work. As noted, many owners use Redline 75W-90 NS, but that sometimes requires adding a small amount (very small amount) of anti-slip additive.

I choose the rotra lsx because it seemed to be the best ...gl-4 and gl-5 and ls ...it also mentioned it can be used in regular gearboxes which also leads me to believe it should be good for syncho ..I also have a call out to the motul tech line to understand their ester based formula which supposed to be gl5 and yellow metal safe as well

I called Mobil 1( for their syn ) and Valvoline ( for their synpower) and did not get a warm and fuzzy about yellow metal safe ...first they said yes then they say no ...and both do not recommend in regular gearboxes

The oil companies are all calling GL5 safe for brass but only because they have reduced the damage to what they consider tolerable. I have boxes full of destroyed Ferrari syncros lubricated by their tolerable blends. In any event GL5 by its very nature inhibits syncro action. It protects hypoid gears in a manner that delays syncro action.

I have every confidence they will all tell you it will be just fine.

That in no way is why brass syncros are damaged by GL5. It is not a corrosion issue. The oil companies know it and the test only provides a false sense of security.

Seems that GL4 is bad for the diff and GL5 is bad for the syncros.
    Which do you use/recommend?

Could be worse. Seems like early Miuras shared engine and gearbox oil, a real mismatch.

Yes that would be worse. But I'm only now sleeping after having jettisoned my pre cats. Now I'm lying awake at night listening to my syncros being munched!

I did not intend to imply that it was, just thought it was interesting read. What your seeing with synchro wear would most likely be a result of the coefficient of friction between the additives is the oil and the brass. BTW thanks for you input on the forum!

No it has been talked to death here though and I am not a big fan of repeating the same information over and over. There is a great deal in the public domain and the list of transmission suppliers that do not use GL5 and specify it only in differentials is a long and interesting list. Most companies refer to GL5 as differential oil and GL4 as transmission oil for good reason.

Not completely true. GL4 was quite happily used in differentials for a very long time and GL5 was developed for specific reasons, not because GL4 was not useful for that. I am not advocating the use of GL4 where Ferrari (almost singularly) calls for GL5. I just believe that people that make that choice should be fully informed about the intended use and side effects before doing so.

I almost got my head round this, but now just confused again.

    So, are we saying....
RL MT-90 good for syncros not so good for LSD
RL 75W90 not good for syncros, but good for LSD

No, wrong on both counts. I don't recall mentioning lsd at all and it really has nothing to do with any of this.

Post #20 from Rifledriver sums up his take on GL4 and GL5 oils, regards to transmission and differentials.
....now he has me thinking to GL4 instead of GL5. Now I'm confused. LOL :)

How does that become a "Safe" choice?
