    hi,guys started my 328 today sounds great, warmed her up for ten mins then bliped the loud pedal to 7000rpm a few times and lots of blue smoke appeared from the exhaust is this normal????

    Blowby from the rings, if it occurs on decel it's valves...just in general terms.

    A simple compression test on the cylinders will give you a general indication. A leak down test will pinpoint the problem. If it's cylinder rings you can go for a while but you are headed to a rebuild.

    How many miles are on the motor?

    Blipping the throttle to 7K after ten min's may be a problem if the oil isn't up to temp...I would keep in under 4K prior to complete warm up.

    No test ideas other than the regular compression and/or leakdown ones. However, "blipping the throttle to 7000 rpm" on an engine not under a load (assuming this is your standard startup procedure) might explain why you have blue smoke.

    Thank you for your help the car has covered 2000 miles will this make any differance, this is the first time i have taken it to such levels

    I would NEVER rev the engine anywhere near 7k rpm when not under load, not a good thing to do, if you want the engine to last.

    ??? It has 2K on the speedo???

    Since an engine rebuild...what are you saying?

    Are you sure it wasn't white smoke -- which would simply mean that there was condensation in the exhaust!?!?

    how did you notice this smoke, thru the rear view mirror?
    the tint on the mirror and rear windscreen could give the impression the smoke was blue.

    i did view the smoke from inside the car through the rear view mirror in my garage, the car has only covered 2k from new. just had an annual service and belts at ferrari, should i still worry???

    Drive the car a little and if possible have someone follow behind you. See what happens when accelerating under load. If you clearly have blue smoke I would have the compression/leakdown tests done to see what is going on.

    When were the timing belts last done? If they have been on the car for a while I would definitly get a 30K service done once you are past the smoking issue. Also have them replace the fuel and vacuum hoses and inspect the engine breather hoses.

    thanks for your help will try that if anyone will follow me, just had the belts done a month ago, also am considering replaceing all the hoses at some stage any ideas how much this would cost?

    Do yourself a favor and make sure you don't have synthetic oil. Go flush the oil with some castrol 20/50, and do 2-3 oil changes in one week... May solve the issue....

    I had a 76 911s I loved. Put in synthetic oil to "improve" it. smoked on warm up each and every time. Never did it before. Aftre multiple oil changes it was 70% better, but she was never the same...

    Roy,
    One thing you MUST do is inspect/replace all the fuel hoses. It seems that every single 3X8 has brittle/weeping/leaking rubber gas lines. You can use standard replacement fuel line cut to fit. It will be the cheapest and most important thing you can do for your Ferrari.
