328 tires

Got a nail in the edge of one of my rear tires yesterday & they say it cannot be repaired.
SOOOO, I'm looking for replacements for my 88 328 GTS.
My driving style is not overly aggressive, but I occasionally (actually, rarely ) get it over the century mark. However, I don't want something that will fly apart above 100 mph, just for the occasional times when that happens. I don't use it at the track.
A place I took the nailed tire to try for a fix gave me estimates for Dunlop (since that was what was on the car when I bought it) Ultra High Performance All Season tires for a price of under $150 per tire.
My question is:
Is a tire like this something that other 328 owners would get for my kind of driving?
If not, can you recommend something that is a better choice?
I don't need to spend a ton for something for the sake of status, just something pracitical & capable.

Go for BF Goodrich g-Force Sport. I bought mine at Costco for my 328 for $89 each mounted and balanced! The tires are very capable -- rated over 140mph, I believe. They're on Tire Rack, also, so you can see the specs/ratings/reviews.

I've been very happy with them, and they're certainly a better tire than anything on there when new.

 

Unless you drive the car in winter weather, get the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 performance tires -- one of the few performance tires available in a 16" size. IIRC the 328s originally came with Eagle NCTs or similar. The grip when warm is terrific, although they're apparently bad in cold temps.

I bought mine through Tire Rack -- good price, fast delivery.

 

I got the new Potenza RE-750's from tire rack. Very happy with them.

 

the kumho ecsta xct isn't a bad tire. seems real popular with the doughnutting segment,
not that they serve as an endorsement in anyway.
i understand they wear like good shoe leather also.

 

I'd skip the Dunlops most are nothing great. I would either go with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 or Bridgestone RE-01R. Check the the Tirerack comparison surveys and charts both are great tires in everything other than very cold weather or snow (but thats not what performance tires are designed for). Both are exceptional tires, and you can benefit from their grip and handling and possibly shorter stopping distances even if you don't take your car above 100mph. I know a ton of guys that have F1 GS-D3s are their 328s and they are very happy. Tirerack is selling the Bridgestones for a little less than the Goodyears. I've had F1 GS-D3s on my 328 since the summer of 2006 and I'm very happy with them (the Bridgestone RE-01Rs were not availble back then). If I were getting tires now I might go with the Bridgestones, they get fantastic ratings and are less expensive than the Goodyears. Most good tires for a 328 shouldn't be that expensive if you have stock 16" wheels. Its when you get into 18s and larger prices get crazy.

Yes, Jon you are right 328 originally had Goodyear Eagles, I know the NCTs were on Lotus Esprits but I'm not sure if NCTs were used on 328s.
