328 weights

I was doing some digging in the archives and have found literally nothing (zero, zilcho, nadda) regarding the actual weight of the 328. We have a ton of good info on 308s and their various figures. So, has anyone had their 328 on a truck scale? If so, what did she say?

 

Somewhere around 3100-3200 lbs in U.S. trim. A little over 2800 lbs in Euro trim. Gotta love those Euros!

the weight depends on

- market the car was built for
- year of production
- GTB or GTS
- equipment

Three easy rules:

1. Early cars for Germany, Schweden, Switzerland and the rest of EUROPE are light.
2. Early and late cars for USA, Canada, Japan are heavy.
3. Cars which are not covered by the first two rules have to be checked in detail. The VIN tells you more.

328 without CAT have 270 hp, with CAT approx. 255 hp and probably sometimes problems with it.

The lightest car is an early German 328 GTB without CAT: 1.263 kg.

Weights commonly quoted for non US cars are dry weights which makes them look much lighter than they are in reality.

There's a substantial difference in dry vs curb weight. The curb weight (US) figure for a 328 would be at minimum, 186 pounds heavier (full fuel, lubricants, coolant) than the exact same car specd at dry weight (NO fuel, lubricants. or coolant).

So IF a 328 (for example) is actually specd in Europe as dry weight, you have to add at least 186 pounds to it to compare it to a 328 in the US because of the difference in how the weight is quoted. So either add 186 to the Euro version or subtract 186 from the US car to get a fairly close comparison.

Based on capacities in the owners manual, the weights involved are:
111 lbs fuel
48 lbs coolant
27.3 lbs 0il

 

A trend I have noticed for Euro cars is that their weights are always dry weights, where the US cars are wet weights.

 

It's not the first thread on this topic - I swear this summer I'll visit the waste incineration plant and ask the guy if he can weigh me in my car.
If I'll find the right exit I'll post the result here ;-)

I have an early euro (german, #59633) - so it should be light - we'll see...

 

He i went to the local Dump in my 1988 328 and ask them to weigh the car everything was out of the car exept what is there from the factory and the number was 3154lb

Yeah, but wonder how they drive them with no fuel, oil, or coolant!

 

Excellent! Many thanks for letting us know. So very similar to the 308s, there is a 'real world' difference between US and Euro cars of about 150lbs.

 

Today I was on a truckscale: 1390kg

Car is an early GTS, 1985 delivered to Germany, no cat, full fuel, space saver spare wheel and tools in the car, no driver.

 

GTB about 20-25 lbs lighter due to lack of extra bracing used for the GTS flex.

 

Interesting. Kg= 2.2 lbs, yes? Which would be 3058 lbs. Was that weight with you in the car or not? If in the car, how much do you weigh?

 

He said no driver which, based on actual weight measurements, looks to me like the maximum ACTUAL weight difference between a euro or US 328 of the same year isn't more than around 50 lbs.

Lightened for the track - sure, but that's got nothing to do with stock weights.

 

True, but I still can't quite figure out where the weight was shaved. That means the car without driver is around 2700lbs. That's amazing for a street 308

 

Is there significant weight diffference between stock muffler and Tubi?

 

Not sure with a 328. IIRC, a tubi is usually around 25lbs while the stock is probably a good 15lbs heavier. Just guessing

 

Where does the weight difference come from? Bumpers & related re-inforcements and smog quipment? Oh, and of couse some grammes for the slow down light.

 

I suspect the weight difference between a US 328 and Euro 328 to be far less extreme when compared to US/Euro 308s, and my previous conjecture on the subject appears to be holding up. The 328 series does not appear to be that terribly different no matter the market with the exception being a few US emissions items and maybe some extra front and rear impact bracing which frankly I have no idea as those bumpers don't appear to be able to take any sort of impact without damage anyway. I would be surprised if there is 50lbs total difference between the two. IIRC, Car & Driver weighed their test US 328 at something like 3090lbs wet (unknown fuel amount) with no driver. Either one is still definitely lighter than a US market 308 QV, but still not by much. Tifosi12 weighed his US QV recently which he had changed to Euro bumpers and a few other light-ish items (still had emissions and exhaust) with a full tank of fuel at 3100lbs. Euro QV, little fuel, performance exhaust, 15" mag wheels, 2960lbs. No real difference between the two as Tifosi's car had 100+lbs of fuel in it and a heavy exhaust.

I still am amazed the amount of crap the 308s have shoved on them to get them sold in certain markets. Much much better with the 328 series.
