    What happened to the timing control chain that it attaches to behind the cover? Did it break? What about the chain gear?

    You can see that the guide flange on the front of the cam belt drive gear is twisted and chewed up. Somewhere in the archives there is at least one mention of this failure due to broken spot welds. The welds broke, the flange came off, it damaged the belt, the cams went out of time, the valves hit the pistons. Ouch! (Most likely scenario???)

    I agree, notice the belt imprint on the flange face.

    I'm surprised you did not also bend the 16 exhaust valves.
