I have read several times that the gearbox on the 456GTA cannot be
repaired. Rather if problems occur, it must be replaced at an
unreasonably high price. This does not sound logical to me.
Does anyone have any information on this topic?

I have heard this too - but I have also heard that the AT is a General Motors design. Please, if anyone knows for sure about the repar costs, please chime in.
    Cheers, st.tully

I'm not sure, but I do not think that GM supplied the ATs on the 456 series. They did for the 400/400i/412, using the TH400 transmission, but I think that the 456 uses an automatic transmission designed and built by Ferrari.

DON"T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!!! Lies, lies, lies, liiiiiiies!!!! Anything can be fixxed. People are told this so that they can be sold a brand new tranny at a rediculous markup, and then robbed for labor. Any automatic transmission can be fixxed. It DOES NOT have to be don't at the dealer. But it doesn need to be done be someone that KNOWS how to fix it. These cars aren't that hard to work on. Don't buy into folk lore, and old wives tales.
