there is a 944 for sale near me. It looks great. Only problem is, 170k. Although the asking price is 3.5 and i have a feeling i could get the guy down to possibly 3. Is this too good to be true. I will go look at it again tomorrow and take pictures and get a vin for carfax.

Can anyone tell me what to look out for?

    Thanks

A NA non S 944? What year? It sounds reasonable enough. Have a PPI done too make sure nothings out of whack mechanicaly and if the maintence papers are there to so show that its been properly taken care of, go for it.

As for what you need to look out for, read this, all of it.

The new Road & Track has a special buyers guide on the 924/944 this month. My issue arrived yesterday. Very interesting. Tells you what issues they have.

I bought a 1983 944 with only 77,000 miles for $4700 a few years back. It looked like it was in good condition but EVERY week something broke or went wrong with the car. I had to fix many things that were ok when I bought the car, I decided to sell it after the oil pick-up tube cracked, this is very common due to bad motor mounts. The car was a money-pit and I sold it after about 10 months of ownership.

I have had my 944 turbo since '96 and it has been pretty reliable. The timing belts are the main thing to watch for. The car handles great, with the transmission in the back it has 50/50 weight distribution. They did an interior update in the middle of 85 with the 85.5 model year having a better looking dash and instrument cluster. Here is a website with a lot of good info
