    I've simply been ignoring this for awhile, but I've run both Spybot with the latest information and Norton with the latest virus definitions and I'm still getting these damn pop ups about every 20-30 minutes, and I think only when I'm connected to the internet. Any ideas on how I can get rid of them? Mainly its been medical marijuana ads and casinos. But they're getting damned annoying.

    And don't anyone dare recommend going to the website listed, I don't want to have some website crash my computer or try to send me some more spyware crap.

    Trust Tony's lavasoft link. Adaware kicks arse. More hits & updates at least 4x as often as spybot, too!

    Just finished downloading and running Ad-ware, found 107! that Spybot had missed. Thank you very much for the link Tony.

    Careful ! I used to use Adaware (Lavasoft) till I heard that it contained its own spyware (I don't know how true this is, but a lot of people attest to it). Spybot is not supposed to contain anything malicious, and I find it more effective than Adaware. I scanned my system after Adaware had certified it clean with the latest reference file, and Spybot found a fair amount of malware.

    agh, a message popped up again so I'm downloading spywareblaster as well and I've gone ahead and turned off the messenger service (not like I ever actually need it).

    Once again, thanks for the help and the links. Every extra little bit of spyware removed is a good thing.

    vraa is correct.

    make sure windows patches are updated. also, IIRC the latest version of AOL instant messenger fixes this problem. AOL patched it with their software updates because microsoft was too slow to get around to it.

    When I try to get rid of the little "hersey kiss" icon in the lower right hand corner (I presume this is part of the messenger cr(p), I get a message that says that it's necessary for some other programs. How do I shut off messenger?

    hershey kiss icon? sorry that's gotta be something else. that isn't messenger - messenger doesn't have an icon (windows messenger that is). try removing whatever it is anyways. not sure of your configuration. have adaware, spybot & hijack this been run yet?

    ???

    doesn't make sense.

    keep in mind, there are several other "adaware" like programs that want you to think they are legit, but they are not. of course they are not called adaware, but other apps, such as spyhunter - more evil "charge me to remove this or else I will load more spyware apps onto your system" kind of stuff.

    Not sure if anyone's interested, but I wrote a little batch script for Adaware that automatically downloads and installs the latest update and runs a full scan. I schedule it to run every night using Windows' "Scheduled Tasks". It calls two supporting programs:
    1. Lynx for DOS (a text based web browser). Size: 1,144 KB
    2. UNZIP (a dos-based unzip utility). Size: 30 KB

    Here's the script (update-run.bat). Used in the way described, it will ensure your system is up-to-date with Ad-aware definitions and scans. It works with the free version.

    @echo off

    :: Update reference file

    :: Get reference file from Lavasoft server
    lynx -timeout=15 -source http://updates.ls-servers.com/reflist.zip > reflist.zip

    :: Unzip reference file
    unzip -o reflist.zip

    :: Move the ref. file to correct directory
    move /Y reflist.ref c:\progra~1\Lavasoft\ad-awa~1\reflist.ref

    :: Delete the zip
    del reflist.zip

    :: Update complete

    :: Begin scan

    :: Scan registry (not working right now)
    :: "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 6\Ad-Aware.exe" +a +c +1

    :: Scan c drive
    c:\progra~1\Lavasoft\ad-awa~1\ad-aware.exe C:\ +a +1 +A
