I am interested in learning more about the history of Ferrari and I was wondering if anyone's read any good book about them?

It feels like my knowledge of Ferrari's, dating only back to the 550 Maranello, is rather limited and I'm dying to know more.

Also, can someone give me a brief explanation of the numbers and why Ferrari chooses specific numbers such as 360, 430, 355 etc?

Ferrari has always used a complex nomelculture for its cars.
In the past the model number referred to the the cubic capacity per cylinder
eg Ferrari 250 GTO was a 3 litre 12 cylinder car
3000 divided by twelve equals 250

There have been a few exceptions along the way and in recent times with model names relating solely to engine size

    To give you an idea

    328 is 3.2 litres and 8 cylinder
348 is 3.4 litres and 8 cylinder but...............
355 is 3.5 litre and 5 valves per cylinder

456 refers to cubic capacity per cylinder again, maybe as this was a spirtual successor to the 365 GTB/4 (Daytona).
The 456 has a 5472cc engine, divide by twelve and you get 456

360 and 430 are more straight forward, probably not to confuse the premiership footballers who buy them, 3.6 litres and 4.3 respectively

Hope this gives you an idea

when it comes to books, i think anything by keith bluemel will give a new enthusiast a good insight to all ferrari models
    Ferrari: The Road Cars
    Ferrari: The Racing Cars
are both very good books, although predominantly picture books keith gives a very good insight to the models

He has also written two much more in depth books
The Original V8 and the Original V12 which is very much more specific and gives great technical detail

Also consider subscribing to Cavallino magazine, absolutely superb
